Not as text msgs, but possbily data.... My research on this one with my old 8320 showed me that without somesort of data plan, it would not connect. JiveTalk tries to connect through BIS / BES initially, then tries TCP. If you don't have a BB plan, you can use a TCP plan (like the $5/5MB plan Rogers used to have). If you don't have any of these data plan service books, using Wifi alone will not work, as the data route checks with the carrier's APN before going out onto the net... So since it checks with the carrier's APN, your carrier can still track your data charges if you don't have a data plan (for Rogers, it was $0.05/Kb)a
Now keep in mind my testing was with v1.03 of JiveTalk. Now that they have released v1.05 that supports wifi, I do not know how the data connection path has changed (if at all). Maybe someone else in the forum can fill you in with this info, as JiveTalk was building v1.05 w/ wifi support to be able to use the software without any data plan and just use the wifi portion of the BB.
Hope this helps.
