you are looking at the wrong option.

I have a 8300 curve, and the option you see is "Device Memory Limit" at the top.

Look under Pictures. last option "Reserved Pictures Memory" thats where you can set it to 0mb like Redflea pointed out.

Default Can the preinstalled pictures be moved to the SD card?

Voila - 2MB w/almost zero effort.

What will happen to the sample pictures if I change this value to "0"? Is there a way that the sample pics can be moved to the SD card to free up more memory? I don't want them to go away permanently, I just don't want them on the device's internal memory. If I do take them off, is there a way I can add all or some of them back on if I want to change my wallpaper later?

AFIK I only have the Verizon themes installed, at least those are the only ones listed in the options. I did not do any of the additional theme installation steps when I worked through the memory optimization procedure in the sticky (uninstalled "help", languages, and sample video - didn't see any options for the sample pics). Does this mean that they're not installed or are they on the device but just not available because I didn't change the vendor code? Do I need to move them to the Unused Java folder on the software on my PC then rerun the installer in DM, like the optimization procedure describes?

Even with the little that I did do, the free memory came up to Got 19, is that good?
