Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys, going to grab a 2gb micro sd card for my 8830. Are all sd cards pretty much the same? I was looking at this deal at new egg, hows it look?

Sandisk is a name brand, along with Kingston. That is about the only difference

The are all the same for the most part. There isn't much that can go wrong with flash memory. It's works or it doesn't. I would shop by what best fits your price range. Think about how much you need. You don't wanna come up short or exceed what your device can support.

2Gb will suit you just fine. As for the brand, I would stick with Kingston or Sandisk.

Right now the Kingston online store has a great deal, 2Gb MicroSD card with adapters for $16 with free 3-day shipping here

Thanks!
The link you posted was for a regular SDHC. What you want is a MicroSDHC.

Like this one: Newegg.com - A-DATA 4GB MicroSDHC Class 6 Flash Card Model Turbo microSD HC 4G - Retail

Cool Clarification of MicroSD vs MicroSDHC specs still needed

It appears (with an annoying 60% certainty) that MicroSD and MicroSDHC sizes overlap.
If MicroSD is using Fat32 and MicroSDHC is not using Fat32(??), this is significant.

So, it appears, both SD and SDHC comes in 4G, but different file systems.

This reference implies the above:

SD Card: Information and Much More from Answers.com

....but doesn't state it outright. (I believe this is a copy off of Wikipedia)

This source supports the above statement, unless Samsung's PR people were sloppy with distinguishing between the two formats:

SAMSUNG Develops Mobile Phone Memory Card with Record Storage Capacity SAMSUNG

To add to the confusion, some BB-83xx's appear to report the capacity
correctly, even though they are not be able to use the full reported
capacity.

blackberryFAQ.com just adds more confusion, stating a compatibility difference between 83xx models.

The FAT32 thing isn't clarified either. Versions of fat32 have capacities ranging from 32GB to 8TB, (depending on the implementation), so fat32 all by itself is not a limiting factor.

Another reference says the incompatibility lies with memory addressing:
(sector addressing vs byte addressing)

There's no shortage of opinion (guessing) on this though.....

Is there a way to get someone with some real authority on this to comment ?

Rule number one: never trust sites like answers.com or wikipedia.org!

The best place to find these types of answers are from the standards groups who define exactly what manufacturers must adhere to for the designation, or the manufacturer websites.

I posted on this subject in a different thread posting detailed information supplied by Sandisk.

There is no overlap- above 2Gb, all cards are microSDHC. Filesystem on microSD is FAT 16, whereas microSDHC are SD FAT 32.

The microSDHC standard is NOT backwards-compatible with microSD because of this filesystem difference.

Hence reader (be it your BlackBerry, card reader or otherwise) MUST be microSDHC certified.

I'm assuming all of the RIM devices that support the media card are compatible, but don't quote me on that one. I just checked for my Curve since that's all I cared about!

Just be forewarned if you want to use a separate reader for the MicroSDHC, it must be SDHC-compatible. Lots of computer and stand-alone card readers that are over two years old probably are NOT.

not all microSD over 2gb are SDHC. The very first set of 4gb produced were in the microSD FAT 16 format, though they are all but gone (i do have 4 or so in my house somewhere)

I'd be curious to know the brand and part number of a 4Gb microSD card. According to the Sandisk information sheet I referenced earlier:
Be aware of non-SDA 2.00 specification compliant SD 4GB, miniSD 4GB, and microSD 4GB cards on the market. If these non-compliant SD/miniSD/microSD 4GB cards record data in a SDHC host, and are then used in a legacy SD/miniSD/microSD host, issues and problems may occur. File system incompatibility, data corruption, and potentially you may actually lose the data/pictures. In addition, if these non-compliant SD/miniSD/microSD 4GB cards are inserted into a legacy SD/miniSD/microSD host device, the host device may not recognize/utilize the card as 4GB, and it instead may read as a 2GB card. If the SD/miniSD/microSD 4GB card does not have SDHC/miniSDHC/microSDHC on it, it is not SD 2.00 compliant.

Default Sandisk recommends 4GB SDHC for 8300

Here's a good clue. Sandisk recommends a 4GB SDHC for the Curve 8300.
It's reasonable to assume 8310 and 8320 at compatible too.

Look at this Sandisk Add
