WOW, New 3G Curve 8310 from AT&T!

I got a new Curve 8310 about 10 days ago from AT&T. Apparently I had no idea what I have now!
Just got this email from AT&T this evening:
Quote:

What? this is not special? It is just GREAT!
I think that it is not real but can you, john, confirm what are you saying? Is Curve 8310 3g capable?

Wirelessly posted (8320 Curve: BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)
the 8310 DOESN'T have a 3g radio. That's 100% a fake message. Don't believe a word of it

just to be clear OP, that is an automated message and in no way does it mean the phone you are using has 3g built in.

there are no real 3g devices in the US or Canada at this time. the only blackberry with actual 3g is the 8707 series device. Anything that claims to have 3g and be a blackberry in the United States is mistaken

**sigh** I thought my tongue-in-cheek remarks, along with liberal use of the emoticons made it clear that I was being sarcastic. Yeah, I know my 8310 doesn't have a 3G radio, I really do. I was just sarcastically posting the (stupid) email I got from AT&T yesterday. Although, I wonder just HOW MANY new 8310 owners end up wasting time trying to get their BlackBerry working on 3G based on that dumb email.
jungleland - sorry, guess I missed your earlier post.

too bad AT&T doesn't use emoticons in their mail and messages... then we could tell when they are winking at us when they send us goofy messages like that.

To top it all off, the new "3G Sim Card" didn't work anyway. When I got the phone, every time I turned it on I got "Sim Card not recognized." Popped in the old Sim card I had, and it worked like a champ.
Just what, exactly, does a "3G Sim Card" do, anyway? Despite the email, we all know it doesn't contain a 3G radio, is there some "bit" that is read and is only there on the 3G Sim Card that says "its ok to turn on your 3G radio (if you have one)? "3G Sim Card" kinda sounds like just a marketing gimmick to me.

Maybe you just had a bad SIM. The one in my 8310 is a 3G SIM but does nothing but make me 'pretend' like I have 3G..lol

it is a SIM that has i believe 128kb of data storage and allows your SIM to be recognized by the 3g towers that ATT has. granted your blackberry does not have a 3g radio, but any devices that do, that you put your SIM card in, will be able to access those towers.

That's incorrect unless you are talking about just blackberry devices, Rogers has released a Video Calling Phone made by Samsung that works on HSDPA (3G) I have used it myself.

Unless you need 3G to download "stuff" it's not all that it's cracked up to be. I used a 3G blackjack for a while and all it does it eat your battery and drop calls. I turned it off on the blackjack and just used Edge. The phone performed better and the batt life was incredible. 3G ain't all that!!

3g is just faster data. think of it like Cable vs DSL. costs more to install, costs more to maintain and gives you access to the same information.

I generally dont talk about anything other than Smartphones usually, excepting blackberries, and that is rare when i mention something other than a blackberry. There are dozens of 3g devices in north america, ATT has quite a few, and VZW has several rev A devices.
