Is there an IM app as good as JiveTalk that is available for free?

There are free ones (Ramble) but I don't believe they are as good as JiveTalk. But that is just my opinion.

imo, jivetalk is worth paying for. though, for me, it eats up the battery like crazy.

I use Google Talk and it works great. It's a pain to set up, but it's reliable and doesn't drop messages (unlike AIM's client, which dropped messages regularly). It's also free. To set up, look it up on the boards, I used PSI to set up jabber.

Untrue, your recipients do not need to have a google account. The use of Transports on the Jabber protocol allow for you to have all services available to you in your Google Talk Buddy List (AIM, Yahoo, Jabber, ICQ, MSN, etc.)

Google Talk is great if you need to go the free route and I would say is tops in the free price range.

JiveTalk is the best. Not only does it support all Instant Messaging types (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc) but it conserves battery life too!

Not sure this is a debatable point, nearly everyone agrees JiveTalk is the best. The OP was looking for the best free alternative.
