I always figured it was because Sprint has horrible service at my house (I usually force my non-BB phones into roaming mode at home), but maybe there are other issues.

Unlike brittonx I am not able to browse with no letters, but I can browse fine with lower case letters, which I didn't think was supposed to be possible.
It's important to note, I cannot browse directly on the Blackberry when there are no letters. What I can do is browse on a laptop that is using the Blackberry as a modem when there are no bars.

Happens on my 8830 on Sprint as well.... quite often.
Turning off the wireless and back on solves it.

happens with any connection, phone even. jivetalk, opera mini

only fix sometimes is a battery pull and sometimes the connection on off has to be toggeled several times

often you can turn the connection off but it wont actually go off, you have to do it twice. then when turned on again, it wont connect to the BB servers..annoying

Has anyone tried changing their settings on the Browser from Blackberry to Internet?
I tried this and get better connections.
Options/Advanced/Browser/Default browser configuration: Internet Browser

I could not go to a lot of sites until I changed this and the difference was night and day.

I've downloaded and installed the software. I'll wait until next week to post; if the problem's still there it should show up by then.

I am running 4.2.2.123

Should I even bother upgrading right now?

It doesn't seem to be fixing much at all.

My bad. I didn't read the app version quite closely enough. I was expecting 4.2.2.240 and it's still 4.2.2.123 so, nothing new here. Sorry about the mixup.

Interesting; I've had this for the past while on my VZW 8830, but was told by others that it was most likely a hardware issue, and that warranty would take care of it.
VZW sent me a replacement unit, but same thing happens - loses all letters next to the antenna icon, and then does the "searching for network" thing several times.
A subsequent trouble ticket with Global Support didn't result in any fixes.
Looks like new software would fix this.

Had a similar problem with the 8830 losing signal all the time. It was terrible. My buddy who bought the same model, a week earlier had no issues at all, so I went into a corporate store and got a replacement unit and problem solved. No more browser issues, no more intermittent signal loss.

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830: BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

I notice the issue more when I am using opera mini.

Wonder what causes this...anyone tried reverting back to the earlier software version (the one that was on the 8830 when it launched in May)?

the 8830 software that came out this week does not correct the issue. I have the new version and had the browser issue today.

I have not seen it with Opera mini but if others have then it is likely an issue with the TCP/IP stack in the device/software
