Default APN Settings: wap.voicestreams.com vs. blank

Please Login to Remove!

I've been using the web on my bb with blank APN settings and everything is working fine. But I still see lots of support questions being answered with wap.voicestream.com being the solution. What's the difference between the 2? I ask because I'm helping someone troubleshoot internet connection problems and we've exhausted almost every possibility.

Thanks.

Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan? If so, you don't need to worry about APN settings.

Yes there's a BIS plan. Thanks. It was just confusing to see the wap.voicestream.com solution often being suggested as the first step when internet problems occur.

Is there anything else that would cause internet and 3rd party network dependent apps to not be able to connect? T-Mobile tech support is baffled as well. We've tried the service books, APN, Host Routing Table/re-registering, browser config... any ideas? BB Messenger, e-mail, SMS and voice are all working fine.

Can you tell us what the third party app is? Maybe someone has had the same problem with it. Anything you can share would help.

jivetalk and the default browser are both giving problems... jivetalk went from timing out earlier to now giving me the "open tunnel failure" error message, which actually helps me narrow it down now.. although I do think its a network issue, since everything was working before and all of a sudden stopped.

Regardless, I'm going into application permissions/firewall settings now, I'll update shortly.

Everything has been set to allow, firewall is disabled, battery pull.. jivetalk still times out, browser gets to some pages, doesnt connect on others... connection meter shows full signal... very frustrating, especially that T-Mobile can't even give me a definitive answer as to if it's their network... it would actually make me feel alot better if I knew that it was. Their solution was to bring the phone into a store.

I had issues with Opera on my Pearl that seemed to be resolved by adding the APN.

Opera, opera beta 4 and jivetalk will not work on my curve with out (for tmo) wap.voicestream.com (no username or password) entered into the APN.

Yeah, this isn't quite true. I, too, have needed the apn settings entered to get some apps to work. It's one of the first things I do after an OS upgrade is reenter the apn settings.

Weird.
I guess that's a T-Mobile thing?

according to a thread on the 8100 forum and the troubles I'm currently having with the wap.voicestream.com APN setting, T-Mobile may be experiencing some difficulties at the moment.

I'll call T-Mobile tomorrow and find out if it's something on their end.

And yes, I've also had trouble with OperaMini not working properly without the APN setting.
