Can GSM Phone Source unlock a new phone that has never been activated on a line of service with Cingular? IE: Drop by the Cingular store, pay full retail for the phone only, go home and request an unlock code?

Thanks,

Thumbs up unlock code

you can get a free unlock code if you purchase your curve from att&t. all you do is call 1-800-331-0500 and request unlock code. they will ask you to fax your receipt to them. i got my unlock codes for the three curves i bought the same day by email.

Default Will 8830 sim card work with 8300?

I would like to stay with Verizon, but I prefer the AT&T Curve over Verizon's 8830. If I get an unlocked AT&T Curve, can I use the 8830 sim card in the Curve? Will both voice and data (using an enterprise server at work) work simply by changing the sim card?

After reading all of the relevant posts here, it looks like it will work for voice on Verizon's network, but I haven't seen anyuthng about whether it will work for data.

Thanks very much for any help.

Um, no. You would need a data contract with AT&T to get any date service from them.

Wirelessly posted (BB 8860: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

You can't use the ATT sim card in the 8830 in the US because the GSM portion of the 8830 doesn't work on the frequencies used in the US.

Without even having service with them?!

I have two lines with T-Mo, never had a Cingular or AT&T account ever...

Another happy customer here - turnaround time was less than 12 hours. Thanks GSM Phone Source!

By the way, to those others considering getting an unlocked Curve, I am on telephone support now with RIM getting my T-Mobile browser going. He told me that people buying Curves unlocked second-hand off of eBay do not have any warranty. The safest way is to buy a phone directly at a Cingular store and unlock yourself just like I did.

my brothers were with t-mobile: but im with at&t. when i bought the three curves they didnt ask a question at all. then i called in a requested the unlock codes for them. my brothers swithed to at&t a few days later because the browser wouldnt work and t-mobile said they dont support the curve cause they wasn't selling them. i got a discount plus a mail in rebate with my curve; but the two i bought for them they charged me the full price. it dont hurt to try and walk in and buy one without an at&t account because they have two prices on the card below the phone. one says 1 or 2 year contract and the other says out right.

I also have the same problem with the browser icon not appearing, but it doesn't stop me because the T-Zones icon does appear which lets me access sites, I just have to go to the menu and open my Bookmarks.

As far as getting the phone outright, I did walk into my local AT&T shop and asked to purchase the phone. He went to the computer and asked me for my Cell Phone number. I said, I don't have Cingular service, he nearly flipped upside down like "What is this clown thinking?" He said "I can't sell it to you without being a customer". I went back and forth a second and he finally said, "Let me check with my manager" and he ran off. Back about 5 minutes later, he said "I figured out how to do it." and then he asked if I was going to use it elsewhere and reminded me that it was locked.

Anyway, I got it without too much trouble, but it defeinitely threw the sales guy for a loop.

You might get you question answered faster if you asked the vendor that question directly. While he does venture here occasionally, it could be a few days.

Known issue... certain firmware (or Rim OS level) doesn't seem to receive the T-Mobile service books correctly...

Downlevel the code on the Curve... Use the O2 firmware.... see -> http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...6-chinese.html

Default I am on Rogers in Canada Benefits to unlocking?

What benefits are there for unlocking my curve? How do I use an unlocked phone? Can I save money? And how much does it cost?
Maybe Adam can answer. I travel a lot.

Bruce,
Welcome to the forums. This has been asked and answered a lot on this forum. A search would be your friend in this case. Unlocking your Curve allows you to use other sim cards besides Rogers in your Curve. You could go to Europe and use prepaid sim cards. With the device locked you can only use a Rogers sim card in your Rogers Curve.

Okay, I'm new to this sorry if this sounds ridiculous. I have a 8300 with ATT. We moved and my husband wants to switch to verizon. Can I still use my new phone with verizon for both phone and data if I get it "unlocked"? Help thanks

No, unfortunatly, you can't use the ATT curve with Verizon. AT&T is a GSM network and Verizon is CDMA. You'll have to get a BB from Verizon. I suggest the 8830.
