BlackBerry Maps - Where did it go?
Please Login to Remove!
It's installed on my AT&T 8300 (unlocked) on T-Mobile, but I can't find any icon for it anywhere! I've switched themes, "Show All" and the like... no such luck finding it!
It is installed on my not-yet-unlocked O2 8300... but I for the life of me don't want to switch back to it. The build quality on the AT&T one is much better. (My O2 one has a "loose" side.) That, and the trackball sucks.
Any ideas? Could this be somehow linked to the browser issues T-Mobile users are experiencing?

When it happened to me a couple of weeks ago, I uninstalled and downloaded and installed it again.
What browser problem?

I tried reinstalling it, but no such luck...
My browser and T-Zones icons are missing... there are a few other threads discussing this.

Missed those other posts. But I assume you've done the usual: resend service books, hard reset (pull battery)...

I tried re-installing from the BB site but it wasn't working on my at&t curve on t-mo... it just never displayed the download screen when attempting OTA.
I installed google maps instead and it seems to be better or comparable anyways.

So I answered my own question by poking around the BlackBerry.alx file from Vodafone UK. Apparently, the LBS.alx file "hides" BBMaps on certain providers.
My question -- WHY? Isn't that one of the biggest selling features of the phone?
Code:
<!-- For 8800 series, hide the icon for Docomo (220), AT&T (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->
<!-- For non-8800 series, show the icon for all carriers except Docomo (220), AT&T (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties, including Amena (Orange Spain - 175). -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="~220|102|124|137|119|162|142|183|147|217|175" series="~8800">
Really, really weird...

I bet AT&T hides it so people use their pay service - always about the $$$$$. Nice find!!

Thanks. Just happy to have it back.
In addition (figuring I don't want to start another thread), there are a couple lines in Platform.alx that will let you 86 the PTT app that AT&Tingular ships in the 8300 software.
Specifically:
Code:
<fileset pttApp="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="102">
<files>
net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod
KnJCDE.cod
</files>
</fileset>
Just change the vendorID token to something other than 102, or set pttApp to equal False.

Mods -- can I suggest stickying this? Not sure if it's known (or not), but it might be helpful to other 8300 owners.

No more Blackberry Maps on ATT
According to RIM, Blackberry Maps is no long available for ATT RIM devices. It was removed if you installed the latest ATT Blackberry OS update.

It can be easily added back with a simple edit of the LBS.alx file. You can edit it yourself by removing all reference to the vendor ID's in the .alx. Or see this thread and download the LBS.alx already edited and replace yours with the one from this thread.

Probably only partially related, but I had a mystery too... BBMaps would sometimes disappear on my Cingular branded 8800.
I figured out the pattern of when it would disappear, however: it would only disappear whenever I used the Application Loader via DM. If I did not use the App Loader, BB Maps would stay until I used the loader again. Each time I used the app loader, it would say something like "removing unrecognized file XXXX_bb_XXXX.cod" (where all I remember seeing was bb and .cod). No clue why. The remainder of the app would stay but I'd have no icon, so basically I always had to uninstall and reinstall via the browser. It would stay for weeks until I used the app loader.

Same issue here
I see the same problem on my unloacked Cingular 8800 (run Rogers latest SW). I'm new to abusing Blackberry's but is they a way to edit something so these files are not removed each time I run Apps Loader?

It's not running App Loader that does that -- it's installing new handheld software that does.

The BBMaps app is actually on the device it's just that Cingular has chosen to hide the icon so you will purchase TeleNav. You can edit the LBS.alx file to get the BBMaps back. You can also download the LBS.alx for your OS version from here:
