A Berry for Traveling Abroad
Please Login to Remove!
There seems to be a lot of choices out there right now in the Blackberry world and I'm hoping that there is one that could hlep me with this issue.
I need to travel from the US to the UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea and China. Is there one Blackberry device that would work in all those areas?

Cingular or T-Mobile will work in US, UK, Germany, and China for sure. I'm not sure about Japan and South Korea.... I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Japan and S. Korea do not use the same networks as the rest of the world. The 7100T that you have will work nicely in the UK and Germany. There is no one device (BB or other) that works in Japan, Korea, the US and the UK...
That would be nice....

I don't know about those specic countries, but I think the 8830 is supposed to work with voice and data in like 60 countries.

Did you not read what NJBlackBerry wrote?
Japan and South Korea use different wireless technology than the rest of the world.
There is no device... none... that will work in the US, UK, Japan and Korea.

Yes I did read the post. What exactly did I say that has you so upset? Apparently once you post in a thread, it should be closed, because there is nothing else anyone can contribute to the conversation. Perhaps next time I will check with you before I post.

Settle down guys....
The 8830 that Verizon is getting is CDMA/GSM and should work nicely in the US (CDMA) and the UK and most other countries (GSM). However, it still won't work in Japan and S. Korea. They use different technology.

well I learned something. I always wondered why none of the cheap knockoff phones from there ever ended up in the states.

Hmm, my Verzon cell phone (CDMA only) works here. I am in on travel in South Korea now.
· Customers with EVDO voice of EVDO PDA Smartphone devices may roam in South Korea by dialing *228 and selecting option 2 to obtain an updated PRL prior to international travel.
So I would think the new 8830 that VZW is releasing will work in South Korea, US, UK, Europe, Asia, just not Japan.
But if one could get their hands on the BB 8707h, then it would probably work everywhere but South Korea.
The BlackBerry 8707h operates on both W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS networks and can be used for voice and packet (data) communications.
Sitll not one that works everywhere, but you CAN cover either South Korea OR Japan AND the US, Asia, Europe, UK, etc.

The Verizon world phone is supposed to be CDMA in the US and GSM outside.
As for Japan, they are on WCDMA 2100 which is not compatible here in the US. I have heard that the 8707v will work in some places in Japan.

No, it doesn't work in Japan.
As mentioned several times in this thread, Japan uses a completely different wireless technology than the rest of the world. A quad-band GSM phone, such as the 8707v will NOT work in Japan.

From what I've been reading, the 8707v will work in Japan (using the 3G 2100 band) but will not work in Korea. It is also GPRS only in the US.

Are the specs on this page incorrect?
http://eu.blackberry.com/eng/devices...specifications
At the bottom, it doesn't mention anything about that model having 3G 2100 wireless support. Just looks like a normal quad-band GSM device.

I remember reading a post on one of these forums from a person with an 8707v saying it worked in parts of Japan. Several others have said the same thing. I can't remember where the post was however, otherwise I would quote it.
In any case, it is difficult to find a US phone that will work in Japan because of their reliance on CDMA2100 technology.
