Upgraded last night and it went perfectly. Right up until I couldn't get EDGE service. Saw the posts above so wasn't too worried. Now I have EDGE service but data program (email, web browsing, gmail, etc.) are responding that they don't have any data service. Tried to register on network and send service books but neither resulted in any response. Any thoughts?

Hi,

what is with my BES?
If I update to 4.2 is it needed to reactivate BES or can I just work like before the update?
Or mybe BES doesn't work after the update?

My IT will be not satified, if I update and then they have to reactivate or the BB doesn't work anymore.

Can anyone run through what you have to do when you upload this? I have no clue where to start. I have downloaded it, but now where?
Tried opening the file that is downloaded, but it says 'error reading initialization file'

The directions are layed out on page 2 or 3 of this thread. You must rename your vendor file(follow directions on this) then plug in BB and open Desktop manager. It will recognize the new OS and run a wizard to set it up.

Installed it yesterday and I noticed a few things:

My 8700C makes a ticking noise like an analog clock all the time. Battery consumption is higher than usual; reboots when I delete an unread message; hangs when BB browser is interrupted before it finish loading.

Installed the chinese version and it looks much better, no ticking sound and no reboot so far.

I now have EDGE service back. Did not realize there was an outage last night.
Anyone else lose notifier settings in profiles after upgrade?

My upgrade finished in the middle of the outage. I now have my BIS emails working and browsing back but it did not stay activated on the BES afterwards. Looks like the only option is to call IT to go through activation again.

Well, some things are getting better.

It took almost 8 hours to get the email address to show, up but once I deleted and re-added my primary email address, it showed up as an option under my profiles...so I was finally able to edit my ringtones, etc.

However, it took me all morning to post this (database error messages galore!).

New twist - I received a VM today and heard a faint constant dial tone even though the phone was not in use. Stayed this way until I listened to and cleared my VM. Even hitting "end call" didn't get rid of it. Weird.

Some of the other problems are probably still a result of the RIM outage

Tried to install the BlackBerry Insight Icon and List themes onto my 8700 after upgrading to 4.2.1.66 and they don't seem to work. I installed the following files usign a modified ALX.

net_rim_theme_bb_insight_list_320x240.cod
net_rim_theme_bb_insight_icon_320x240.cod
net_rim_bb_backdrops_320x240.cod

They are installed now and both "BB Insight-Icon" and "BB Insight-List" options show up under Options -> Theme. However neither of them will show a preview and I can not activate them. Any ideas? Is there another file from the 4.1 firmware that I missed that will allow the older themes to work?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Went from the cingular upgrade to 4.2 during the outage. Everything came online this morning and it works like a champ. I have the unlock bug too. I like the new Zen, and the way your last BB messenger message is in you message inbox.

Default 4.2 and PocketMac

I upgraded to 4.2 successfully. My 8700g runs faster and I really like the Vodafone Today theme. However, now I can't seem to get PocketMac to recognize my 8700 . Tried different cables. Tried restarting, fixing permissions. Everything but reinstalling. Any other ideas?

After spending several days with the 4.2 upgrade and countless hours messing with it, I have decided to go back to the reliable 4.1 OS. I simply cannot stand the absence of the list file when you press the menu convenience key. But the biggie for me is a noticeable differnce in the ringtone and alert levels with the 4.2 OS. I am so use to the booming sound of the phone which seems to be lost with this new OS. Maybe it is just me, but I hear a big difference. In any event, I am not going to loose any more time with this new firmware and just wait a couple of months for the 8300

Got it all working, and so far so good. The fact that you can't unlock with the wheel sucks though.
