Cingular to apply "at&t" alpha to all new customers' and upgraders' display tomorrow!
Please Login to Remove!
I received this e-mail today from at&t (Cingular). Check it out:

Effective Sunday, April 15, alpha tags (the company name appearing on handset screens) for new subscribers and existing customers upgrading their handsets will display AT&T instead of Cingular. Existing customers' handsets will begin displaying AT&T in late April. While the majority of customers' handsets will be changed in 60 days, the process is expected to be completed in about six months.

Carrier branding is pushed down to the phones, not programmed in. That's why old ATTWS phones now show Cingular.

Yep - there is a table that translate the code sent from the tower into a tag. A couple of times a year I pick up a code that does not get translated into a name (last time it was Suncom in Puerto Rico). I send a note to my carrier and it has gotten repaired.

JL-
I think this references the Cingular on your home screen will probably be replaced by AT&T according to the above information but maybe the splash screen as well.

The home screen network ID I can see changing remotely, but I don't see how they can change the splash screen..

Agree on the SS part; I do not think they could do that over the network but I have been wrong before (once or twice).

I would imagine they would have included it in the e-mail if it concerned the splash screen, but who knows. The only thing certainly changing is on your home screen where it says "Cingular" which will become "at&t".

For what it's worth, it appears that AT&T is changing the firmware as well; I received my 8100 on the 11th, and it was running 4.2.0.69 with Cingular branding; coworker received his 8100 on the 13th, and it was running 4.2.0.77 with AT&T branding. That said, I'd say new subscribers and upgraders could probably anticipate seeing the AT&T branding in more places than just the alpha-tags..

Did he happen to have the red version of the Pearl? This is the one that comes branded at&t out of the box. As far as I know, they have not yet begun this for the Black one.
I also was under the impression that the highest version of OS we had seen was .73. Guess not...

My BB 8100 changed at 3:00 pm EDT Sunday, April 15. I think the change was hastened because of another problem I had. Coincidentally, at 11:00 am I discovered my text messaging wasn't working. I called in and they said they were "upgrading systems" and couldn't be fixed until 3:00. Of course, I I expected at 3pm I would have to call back but at 3:00 I got some sort of system text message and my phone now says AT&T. My other Cingular line still says Cingular (on a Palm Treo 750v).

If you are dying to have your phone say AT&T, you can call CS (or after hours CS) and they will push the alpha tag to your device for you. Otherwise, you can just wait. It's your choice.

I am in no hurry what so ever. I can't see why some are making such a big deal about it anyway.

No hurry here either. Just posting that the new tag hasn't appeared.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 8700C: BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)
Just saw AT&T being displayed on my 8800 few mins ago. Cingular and Jack, orange splat, have walked under the sunset.
