Exclamation What exactly does SOFT RESET mean?

Please Login to Remove!

I gotta few questions....

1) I just wanted some clarity to what everyone means by "soft reset?" My understanding is this is powering off the device thru the applications menu by selecting "FULL POWER TURN OFF." Please correct me if i'm wrong.

2)Also, there has been alot of talk about pulling out the battery. The last time I pulled my battery out was maybe 3 weeks ago. My pearl is working just fine. Is pulling out the battery labeled as a "HARD RESET?"

3) I also heard some talk about a HARD RESET APP (so we dont actually have to pull out the battery) true? If i got this confused with someone else, then please explain what the app actually is....

Thanks all!

Actually if I'm correct... soft reset is the program that is basically duplicating the battery pull. A hard reset is the actual battery pull... don't know anything about what the heck hard reset app is... then again I may be wrong.

That's what I thought too.

A Soft Reset can be done by holding down [Alt] and [Num] and hitting the [Del] key (where [Alt] is the bottom key in the left most column of the keyboard, and [Num] is the bottom key in the second from the left column, and [Del] is typically the second key from the top in the rightmost column).

A Hard Reset is a Battery Pull. This can sometimes also be done by using the [Alt][Num][Del] twice in a row, but the battery pull is more reliable. If the device doesn't sit with the hour glass for at least a few seconds (up to 30+ on some devices!), and do a full security scan of the software, you don't have a hard reset.

These are NOT the same as a power off / power on cycle. I've seen situations where a power cycle doesn't reset the device - it just comes up with the same problem, and I've seen situations where a soft reset doesn't clear a problem and only a Battery Pull works. Just to confuse the issue more, my 8800 comes up with two power off options - Turn Off and Full Power Off. I don't see much difference between the two though!

Just time how long the device takes to come up (especially on a 7100!). You'll see that the power cycle is fairly quick, and the soft reset is not as fast, but quicker than a battery pull!

8100 cannot be reset from the keypad. That's why SoftReset is so useful...don't have to pull the battery to reset.

I've always used these terms as follows:

A "soft reset" is a battery pull or equivalent, similar to rebooting the device

A "hard reset" refers to resetting the device to out-of-the-box condition.

For example, I have a windows ce based GPS device that has a soft reset button and a hard reset toggle. The soft reset reboots the device. The hard reset toggle reloads the OS from the device ROM, restoring the OS to factory condition.

The only way to do a hard reset on a blackberry is to reload an OS and NOT restore user data or completely wipe the device and reinstall the OS.

This is accurate on Palm or Windows devices, but not with BlackBerry devices.

Per Kbase articles KB03902 and KB03903.

Soft Reset - A soft reset is often used to re-establish communication between the handheld and your personal computer. A soft reset is an alternative to a hard reset. It stops all applications running on the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld, then restarts them. To perform a soft reset on your handheld, pressALT-CAP-DELETE.

Hard Reset - Often, the first step in troubleshooting network, software or hardware errors is to perform a hard reset. On Java™ handhelds, this is accomplished by removing the battery. A hard reset on a C++ device is performed by pressing the Reset button.
