I have a Verizon 7750.

The device was originally used with my company.

When I left that employer, I kept the phone. I contacted Verizon and asked for a voice only package -- no data. No email. They said okay.

Since then (January) I've been billed (later credited) with hundreds of dollars in data time.

Three billing cycles later, I spoke with Verizon again today and was told that the Blackberry MUST at least have email service. They said I MUST pay for data. They said data cannot be turned off.

Verzon says there's no way to eliminate the data charges. I must either pay for the data (email and/or internet) or get a different phone.

Question.

Can data be turned off on the phone?
I just want the voice functionality.
Is Verizon blowing smoke?

I would call Verizon Tech support back. I know the Cingular (GSM) blackberry devices work with voice only, so I think you should call back, and hope for someone that knows what they are talking about (Hope with all your might!)

Even if you turn off or disable all data functions on the BB itself, you would still be "signed up" for some form of data plan with Verizon that probably has some minimum monthly charge whether any data is transmitted or not. I also suggest you call Verizon again.

Yep. Just spoke with Blackberry Support (not Verizon) and we're okay.
Problem resolved. Data is turned "off".

May I ask how you went about doing that I am interested in getting a blackberry 7250 on the VZw network for voic only. I have heard about a National Access Block that VZW can add to your line to prevent data, but supposedly you have to talk with blackberry/pda tech support at Verizon as they are the only ones who know about it. When you turned off data was it on the phone itself or with VZW. Thanks for your help.

FWIW, my 4.1 OS has the ability to turn data off on the handheld.

So do you have a pay as you go plan and you just disable data. Another thing I have heard is that even if you don't use web or email push, the BB will try to connect peridiocally to the network. I am assuming that disabling data on the BB prevents ALL DATA including this. Does anyone know if the 7250 has this feature as well. Sorry for all the questions, I am very new to the whole idea of a BB and don't have the money to pay off a outrageous BB data bill.

Ability - I don't turn it off, but my understanding is that it shuts off the requests. Why might I ask then are you getting a BB if you don't want data. That's their primary use and a Palm has much better Calendar/Datebook/Multimedia uses.

Could someone please tell me how to disable data completely on this model and save me the trouble of going to T-Mobile? Somehow the phone is accessing data even when you're not using any applications. I've been trying to fix this for months. :(

I would also like to be able to disable data for users that are traveling abroad and dont want to incur large data charges (2 cents per kb!!!!). Do I just need to disable email redirection and wireless pim sync until they return? I would prefer not to have to call Cingular and cancel their data service and then re-enable it everytime someone leaves the country.
