Default 8703e - AIM / Email / Phone

Please Login to Remove!

I have never owned a blackberry before, but have been reading alot about them. My question is if I strictly need to be able to use AIM, Emails, and the actual phone, is a Blackberry 8703e my best bet? The unlimited data plan is like $50 per month on top of my phone plan which is like $100 per month. Thats $150 per month. Am I better off just getting a Sidekick 3 and using that strictly for data plan, while continuing to use my Verizon LG 8100 phone?

Then I would have to carry 2 devices around, but its cheaper, and I'm familiar with the Sidekick since I've owned one. Just the screen is so shitty on them.

What do you think I should do?

My two-cents: Keep it as simple as possible. Having two phones would be twice the taxes, twice the activation fees, and any other pesky monthly charges. If it were my decision to make, I would keep it at one device and eat the cost. I sometimes see people with a blackberry and one or more cell phones on their belts....All I can say is OUCH that's gotta be heavy. :(

Best of luck with your decision!

i do agree ! but remember alot of the people own blackberry's are business men or women and the company that they work for somtimes pays for there blackberry service and phone. my brother in law has a blackberry and his personal phone and he tells me that people text message his personal phone and call on that phone because he is worried that some information in textmessage he gets might not be P.C. . but you are right thats alot of money wasted if u are paying for both lines

how do you get AIM on it? Can you please explain? That's exactly my set up, Sprint 8703e.

I thought only the 8100 could use aim?

How did you do it?

Its actually cheaper having both. My cell phone with Verizon and the data plan with T-Mobile on a Sidekick is cheaper than my cell phone with verizon and a data plan with verizon for a blackberry!

futurestars, where in the world are you paying $50 for data? I have 1000 anytime minutes, and unlimited data ($39.99) with sprint and the 8703 for right at $100 + taxes. i'm not a business type guy, and use my phone for exactly what you're asking and I love it. I use it for everything, aim, email, phone, weather, directions, games, rss feeds, and to manage my website. I recently converted a die hard palm (treo) user to the bb and he absolutely loves it. It's simple, yet very functional, and what it does, it does very well.

i'd rather have one device that does all that and pay a little more than have to carry two devices around. especially a SK cause they are HUGE!!!

Well I just wondered why the MDA, SK3, and Dash all come with Yahoo IM and AIM on them, and the blackberry doesnt?

Also, I read that if you have more than (1) email account setup on the blackberry, everything piles into one folder.

Any thoughts on this?

Default Ok, 8703e? SK3? Dash? MDA?

I'm having a very difficult time choosing between the (4). I'm currently on Verizon and have a vx8100 phone. The problem, I need IM's and Emails.

I was going to buy a Sidekick 3 to use since it meets my guidelines just fine, and keep my regular phone, but that screen is absolutely terrible when compared to a Blackberry, Dash, or MDA device.

I am strictly needing IM's and emails, nothing really else. If I go with the Blackberry 8703, then I can use it as my phone as well, and not carry two devices. But, is the blackberry really the best for IM'ing and emails?

Being it doesnt come with an IM client, it makes me wonder if its really the best. I know you can get ramble, but is the interface the same as AIM like on a computer? Can you toggle back and forth from conversations easily? Does it notify you when you have new messages, etc? Does it stay logged in all the time if you'd like it to?

And for the emails, can you have more than (1) email account and have the emails go into seperate folders, or does it all pile up into one? Do you get a vzw.blackberry.com email address automatically?

I also heard the time doesnt change on a blackberry by itself when traveling and comming into other time zones? That kinda sucks!

What do you guys think I should do? I've been favoring the SK3 and the MDA because they have actual "keyboard layouts". Although, in the store today when playing with the BB, I was able to type fairly fast actually.

HELP ME MAKE A DECISION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blackberry 8703? Dash? Sidekick 3? MDA?

All i can say is WM5 is a terrible os - and yes i have used it extensively. complicated, requires hacking a registry (on a phone!) to enable things that should be there in the first place, and very unstable to boot. add SLOW on top of that and you get very frustrated very fast.

BB is simplicity, stable, and a good phone.

Yes!

There are free clients for Yahoo and Gtalk. You can actually access MSN, AIM, and others through Gtalk - do a search.

And for the emails, can you have more than (1) email account and have the emails go into seperate folders, or does it all pile up into one? Do you get a vzw.blackberry.com email address automatically?

Yes you can have more than one account. It will put all the messages in one folder but you can also view separate folders for each account

I also heard the time doesnt change on a blackberry by itself when traveling and comming into other time zones? That kinda sucks!

I suggest you get a BB because you said you needed email and BB has excellent push email if you aren't familiar with it its just when someone sends u an email it just goes to your phone within a few min. Wm5 is horrible is lags and is slow

Have you thought about getting 8100? I know it does not have a full keyboard. Here's a chart to help you out.

Pearl is a nice BB but its got a small keyboard...if you want a camera and media player the pearl would be good I suggest you try the suretype before you buy it though I use suretype and I enjoy it I've used both qwerty and suretype and I love suretype its easy to get used to

100% need a full keyboard. Thats why I stated I like the sidekick 3 and the MDA best because they went above and beyond with the acutal "keyboard layout".

Is there a way to stop various email accounts from dumping into the same folder?

all messages/sms/emails will come in to your "messages" folder, however each email account will have its own email account devoted to it

RIM is soon coming out with their own IM program (rumor has it), so soon the blackberry will come with AIM and Yahoo

I think all of the emails go to the same folder, but when you create an email account it puts a shortcut in your icons so you can hide the catch-all folder and access each folder individually if you'd like.

That being said, I'm a new blackberry user and EXTREMELY happy with the results.
