I am debating either getting an iPod nano or picking up these headphones: Shure i2c Integrated Sound Isolating Earphones + Mobile
and using the Pearl for a music player. I would mainly use the music player feature when I work out and I am somwhat worried about the Pearl's lack of ruggedness in a gym environment.

Thought and opinions from those who are using either or both devices are appreciated.

You do not seem to need a phone so get the iPod.

I think you misunderstood the question - I will clarify:
I have a Pearl, but I'm not sure if I should get a Nano as well to use in the gym, etc.

if you've got a case/pouch/holster/something to secure it the ruggedness shouldn't be an issue. then you don't have to juggle your phone, iPod and the weights.

A breif story about the ruggedness of the Pearl:

I was involved in an auto accident last Tuesday. The driver behind me hit me with such force that it activated his air bag and completely crushed the front of his vehicle. The frame of my Explorer is bent downwards at approx a 30 degree angle. Insurance will declare it a total. Amazingly, and gratefully, no one was injured.

I had my Pearl in my hand at the point of collision. The impact threw the phon from my hand, and seperated the battery cover and battery from the device. I spent a frantic minute looking for the parts of my phone so that I could call my wife, insurance company etc.

The Pearl did not have a scratch on it anywhere, and functions perfectly.

It may look a little fragile, but it has certainly passed my ruggedness test.

To further clarify, I do not use the phone in the gym. I would like to smack the people I see sitting on a weight bench or leaning in the squat rack talking on the phone. If I were to use the Pearl in the gym, I would have wireless OFF. I don't need to be distracted by a phone call or an e-mail while lifting 300+ pounds.

Your right I did misunderstand... Oops

I would still get the Nano, as then you have something very light, compact, and it saves your Pearl from excess exposure to humidity that is usually present in that enviroment....

How do you like your Pearl? Is it your first BlackBerry?

I just bought a 7130c and it's my first BB, I am very happy with it.

all righty then. then I would go for the pod. holds more and can do more. just realize the music doesn't necessarily transfer from one to the other. (at least very smoothly)

Nano is a music player and the Pearl is a phone. Id never replace one for another personally.

The Pearl is my 3rd BB, and is by far the best I've had (for my needs) out of the 7100t and the 8700g.

Well, you could use it in a pinch but I think you'd be a lot happier in the long run with a nano. 1gb microsd is going to cost you at least $50 and you could get a 2gb nano for $150. For that matter you could get a new iPod shuffle for $79 and that is the ultimate workout mp3 player.

Frankly, I think you'd be happy with the new iPod Shuffle. It's incredibly small and only costs $80 for a gig. Check it out.

I think we're missing the other side of the equation in the question that JeffAUV poses: namely, that if he doesn't get the nano, he will then use the funds for the fabulous Shure headphones.

The Shure headphones are amazing, and will do wonders with the sound of any portable device. Headphones are to a portable mp3 player what speakers are to a home stereo system: the most important component in determining quality of sound.

So, I'd say go for the Shure headphones. A nice compromise might involve what nusqax suggests: buying the new shuffle, along with the Shure headset, if you want the second device.

iPod Nanos and Shuffles are tiny even compared to the diminutive Pearl. For working out it's a much better choice. Plus, if you get the Nano, you can use the cool Nike+ attachment for running and walking. I've used it and it's incredible.

Unless of course you have wide feet. Nike shoes is bad news for people with wide feet.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one!!!!! Never been able to wear a Nike shoe in my life. 7.5EE--Try finding that size!

I don't mind carrying my iPod and my Pearl. 1GB just isn't enough space to have much for tunes on...especially after loading the pearl with pictures too. I'll stick with my nano and the Pearl.
