I just finished using an 8707 for a couple of weeks. We are renewing contracts currently on 40 7100 and older models for 8700v models (we are getting the devices free) and we were looking at 10 of the 8707v models as well, but they were not going to be free (GBP 200 a piece or so was what they were offering).
Anyway, we have decided at this time not to go with the 8707v models. Not worth the extra money, especially when we can get 3G PC cards free and it uses the same data plan as the 8707v if you use it as a modem.
As for your questions...
1. The 8707v is the same exact case as the 8700c although a different color. The 8707v (as well as the 8700c) is basically the same exact size as the 8700v, although the 8700v is a bit thicker but not too much. Height and width are about almost exactly the same.
2. 8700v is faster device in general than the 8707v (not bandwidth faster, just overall using the device such as scolling through email, etc). Obviously data on the 8707v is faster since it is 3G versus GPRS. But, if you do not go through BES it won't matter since the 8707v at this time will not allow TCP connections from the BlackBerry itself so no third-party apps that need that will run on the 8707v (again, if you go through BES they will work).
3. the 8700 works fine with MMS and third-party apps. MMS requires your contract support it and by default I am not sure if the Blackberry plans from Vodafone have it. Our company plan does not have MMS.
Couple of other differences...
- The tethered modem does nothing for me personally. If it was Bluetooth it would be great. But as it is, a 3G card is just as good as a tethered phone in my personal opinion.
- I thought the sound quality was a bit better on my 8707v versus my 8700c (by the way, I have an unlocked 8700c since I split my time between the UK and the US). Not enough of a difference to really matter.
- The 8700v comes with a soft, leather like case. The 8707v comes with the same, but it has a magentic flip cover on it to prevent launching your Blackberry across the room if you trip
- The new today theme and Vodafone theme on the 8707v is nice. But people here have successfully loaded it on to a 8700 so not a real difference.
- Battery life on the 8707v was terrible. I would say the battery life was only about 50% of what I get on my 8700.
That's about all i can think of off of the top of my head. Anyone else have any other differences?
In short, my final conclusion was its great to see RIM provide a 3G Blackberry, but it is definitely first generation (if not earlier!) at the moment and really does not offer much, if anything, beyond the 8700 at this time. I am sure over time they will get it right and leverage the 3G capabilities later. Although they say the 8707v works in Japan, which is good. So I am keeping it for trips there but I am staying with my 8700 for normal everyday use for the moment.
