1 - don't know why you had to turn wireless on. Maybe it was turned off before the device was powered off, and the device remembered the setting, or it's as jsconyers said and the battery had been run all the way down. But there is no need to turn the device off, if you have no reason to turn it off.
2 - Ditto jsconyers comment. Copy SIM contacts to device contacts app.
3 - All messages, as well as both sent and received, are lumped together in the messages app. There should be some distinguishing characteristic of sent messages versus received, but I don't know what you should be seeing on the old model and OS.
I expect you will see contact name in place of number once you've put the contact information in contacts/address book.
Word of advice: Spend some time going through all the menus and options. Drill all the way down. If you see something you don't understand, check the help app on the device and/or google the terms. And don't forget blackberryfaq.com.

Answer to point 1. Before I found out that the power-on button is the same button you use to adjust the brightness, I was turning the phone on by removing the battery and inserting it again. That way it turns on automatically. But when it turns on that way it seems I had to turn wireless on every time. But now I know where the power button is, I found it now turns on and the wireless comes on too.
Answer to point 3. Messages I've sent have a little green tick next them, and messages I've received have an envelope next to them.
Thank you for the website link also. I'm really starting to like this phone. Plus it looks great!
