It has been discovered and confirmed that Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. has poached at least five members of the Research In Motion enterprise sales staff in the past 18 months. The information comes from The Wall Street Journal, who discovered most of the details on social networking site for professionals LinkedIn.
This, of course, means that Apple is more serious about pushing the iPhone as an enterprise and business device. An Apple spokesperson has even proudly confirmed that the 5 individuals in question are now working for the company. However, the spokesperson did offer further explanation.
The employees in question are:- Paul Alvarez Former RIM Global Strategic Account Manager Now: Apple Enterprise iPad & iPhone Sales Representative for Canada.
- Joe Bartlett Former RIM Senior Global Sales Manage Now: Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) Enterprise Sales Representative New England.
- Peter Decker Former RIM Global Account Manager Now: Apple iPhone Sales Representative Greater New York City Area.
- Steve Marshall Former RIM Global Strategic Account Manager Now: Apple iPhone Sales Representative Greater New York City Area.
- Geoff Perfect Former RIM Head of Strategic Sales Now: Apple Head of Enterprise iPhone Sales.
At least, we now know that theres something at Waterloo, Ontario-based Research In Motion [RIM] Inc. that Apple likes or wants. The employees.

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
I don't think this means much. If Apple really wanted to poach, they'd be stealing devs.

Apple doesn't want (or need) RIM developers. What they were missing however is sales/marketing skills in the Global 1000 enterprise space. Not only do these hires bring in those skills, they also most likely have long term relationships with the CIOs of these companies can can be leveraged for large bulk corporate purchases of Apple products.
FWIW, this is more detrimental to RIM then the poaching of a few Kernel developers.

Completely agreed. This is probably the most detrimental thing Apple can do.

Obviously these assholes didn't care much about RIM. Good riddance.

Yes, how horribly evil - because I'm sure RIM would have gone bankrupt before letting them go if business should have gone bad.
Shame on the sales guy for (what I assume) was a better opportunity

I've had account managers move to different suppliers. All it does is get them in the new company a meeting. If the product is not suitable, it's a dead meeting.

Absolutely....but it does get them in to articulate the value proposition.

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
I used to run a Domino BES. We moved to Exchange.
With that, a ton of my users ditched BB and got an iPhone for ActiveSync.
Almost all of them have come back to BB.
Why? AS functionality on Exch2k7 blows.
A contact @ MS recently told me to "get some Windows phones in - do you REALLY think we allow full ActiveSync tech on an Apple device?"
I LOL'd @ trying to convince my users to go WinMo.
Right now you could send any sales rep into my Org singing about iPhones, but the AS backend just doesn't meet up to what BES/BB can do.
Now... If ever MS build an ActiveSync system that does everything a BES does and works fully with iOS... THAT is the RIM killer.
MS have most organisational email systems.
Apple have most end user loyalty.
At the moment, they don't play too nicely.
If those 2 hooked up properly, RIM would have a massive struggle.

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
I too think what they actually want is RIM's corporate customers. The poaching of those employees (and their relationships with their customer contacts) is I think a means to an end...

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
I think the point regarding contracts is moot. An enterprise (vs SMB) company isn't going to switch from RIM to Apple bc their sales rep changed.
In the SMB market this might matter... but how many customers of any size buy HW directly from Apple/RIM vs their carrier?

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
No they're not, but if they've been buying RIM, the RIM rep should understand the customer's needs very well indeed if he/she is any good. So they are best to be able to explain how or why a switch or migration to, say, Apple might be good for them. The customers are not (normally) stupid, but the ex-RIM person should be able position Apple in in its best possible light, knowing what the customer's needs are.

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
I think I recently came across and article where US court ruled that its ok for these companies to do the poaching. I guess now it will be more open.
My only question is: Can apple devices really be adopted by the enterprise community or this is just a long shot to try and then see if they can do a "hostile takeover" of RIM.
Time will tell !

Re: Apple stealing RIM employees...
In last 3 years Apple has made big gains in the business world by correcting problems like security and strong integration with standard office software which RIM offered. While RIM has failed to evolve with the smartphone market. Also Apple has made adjustments to its product so that it can fit the business world, but RIM has failed to evolve to the demand of consumers. So i think that Apple devices are stealing the market.

The iPad and iPhone still have a long way to go to be competent business devices. We have a few here. They are fun. But they are no where near as efficient in the enterprise as a BB is at this point in time. Nor are the PIM functions close to being on-par.

We'll see. If I had to bet on RIM or Apple still being around in 5 years, I would put my money on Apple. RIM was top of the world, they lost sight of the big picture and they are spiraling down fast. If RIM was smart, they would license their BES services to Android and iOS.
