Default BES migration - cloning possible?

Please Login to Remove!

My organisation is in the process of virtualising all of its servers, and it will soon be time to do our BES!

The most obvious way to do it would be to take the BES offline, clone it to the new virtual server, then bring it back online.

Is this too simple?

We are running BES 4.1.6.

Instead of virtualizing our 4.1 server we just brought up a new bes 5 environment and moved the users.

P to V can work but its best to do a clean OS install along with BES.

look at a knife edge cutover if you like to do it right

There's no data on the BES that should be changing (assuming non-local SQL). We did an online P2V without issue a couple months back. Go for it. It was easy. You can always roll back to the physical box.

Excellent, thanks everyone. And I should have mentioned we run Exchange 2007.

I was a bit worried about encryption keys and handsets needing to be reactivated, as we've had situations like this in the past.

EDIT: wait, our BES does have SQL server running locally - is that likely to be a problem?

I have seen SQL use a bit of resources in a VM.
Most use a dedicated SQL server for it or place it in a diff VM.
SQL express is free and works fine with BES

I was asked about SQL by the P2V guys, so this is probably something that is going to be taken into account. I'm not directly involved in the P2V - I'm just the BES admin.

Thanks again for the advice!
