Default How to force new account to be POP3

Please Login to Remove!

This is a follow on from w w w . blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/217359-how-force-pop3-instead-imap.html. (Sorry about the expanded link - only my second post)

I have BIS on O2 (UK) with several email addresses. The other day I had to reload the OS, and it seemed the only way to get the email working was to delete the email addresses and reload them. However, one of the email servers uses the sames server address for POP3 and IMAP, and I cannot seem to get it to configure as POP3.
I have tried leaving out the password, but then the (PC based) dialogue only offers the opportunity to put in the server and not the access method.

In response to the expected question of "why POP3", I have the system set up so that I can synch my desktop and Laptop and avoid large downloads to the laptop when it is on a dongle.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Other than forcing the use of the POP server which you already tried, I would suspect it may be the remote server is switching to IMAP when queried if it offers both. You may have to experiment with deleting a few times to see if you can get the email server to work the way you want it.

Thanks tsac.

IMAP is really unsuitable as my ISP agreement only allows me 50MB (to include the website) so I cant afford to leave stuff up there. The emails on my blackberry go at +2 days, which is when they get knocked off the server. Why is the deletion of emails the only thing that RIM got right on their IMAP implementation?

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and access the email via Gmail, or something.

Thanks again for your advice.

Couldn't you set up a forwarder from the account so that it sends all mail to the gmail? You could then link the gmail to your device and it also solves the problem of messages being deleted as a copy will be stored in gmail.

I've done that before with my private email address.

Thanks for your suggestion Sytner
However, that raises the problem of replying to messages. However, I may have to do that if I can't work out anything better.
