Default wi-fi

I just got a blackberry 9700 with BIS. i have no problem with the phone everything works great.
except
i travel a lot,and my local provider advised me to turn the Data service off while roaming because i wud end up with hefty bills.
at the time ,i thought it wud b no problem,as i can use the wifi to connect to the net. However it seems that if I turn dataservice off,i lose also my internet connection.
i am not interested in receiving push email on my device, while abroad, but wud be gr8 if i could access msn and facebook applications.

appreciate if you cud advise if this is true or if there are any workarounds

tnx

Wirelessly posted (White and Nerdy)

There's no way around this other than to disable the data on the carriers end...

With AT&T, I sign up for an international data roaming package (I think about $20 for 20 megs) when I am going abroad and cancel it when I return. This seems to do the job.

Because the service providers are in business to make money. Wifi is free (or, at minimum, it doens't make money for them- the service providers)...

Because if you aren't roaming, you can use wi-fi and not be charged a thing!
Faster connection etc.
