Wirelessly posted (White and Nerdy)

Do you have a BLACKBERRY plan, or an unlimited internet plan?

You can search here and also read the FAQ. Look for "tether" or "use BB as a modem".

Make sure the BB data plan you have also includes tethering. Some carriers force you to get another add-on plan for that. Otherwise, you could have a huge data bill.

Here is something to get you started: Using BlackBerry As Modem - BlackBerryFAQ

If you don't have wifi the 8900 will be extremely slow web browsing, almost exasperating. Your carrier will need to give the settings if they are not listed in the FAQ links. Like "initialization command string" that goes in your modem settings on your laptop.

If you can't get it to work for free, I use Tether, a one time purchase. Great on wifi, still slow on EDGE.

You can use the Desktop Manager v5, it comes with a module to connect the BB as modem.

The 8900 can be used as a modem? I was under the impression that it couldn't

Hi,

Can you elaborate on this? I have BB Storm 1 (9500) and Desktop Manager 5.1.28 installed, downloaded the modem driver from official page, but still not sure how I can use the internet on my notebook from my BB.

Can you please shine some light on this?

Thanks so much in advance, would be great to have this working!

Laptop. I wasn't aware they even made PC's anymore (said sarcastically).

edit: I asked this because in the FAQ, the 8900 is not listed as having this capability by itself. If I remember, it says you need an external app or something.

the FAQ is probably outdated.

i asked because i thought that it might only allow tethering to laptop users (but upon reflection, that really doesn't make sense...).

I know i have used it on my laptop, but i dont remember seeing the IP modem bit on my desktop... but i checked. it is there.

Make sure you have version 5.0.1 of the DM. this is the file i DL'd from RIM 501_b049_multilanguage.exe

if you do have that version installed already, uninstall completely ..restart and all that jazz and then reinstall but make sure to do a custom install so you can make sure that that particular module is being installed.

also, make sure you are running as administrator when you install.
