Default Handset radio defaults to OFF after reset/drained battery

Please Login to Remove!

As the thread title says, all of the handsets on our BES (4.1.6) default to the radio being OFF if the battery goes flat or the device is reset (via alt-shift-del or battery pull).

We have fairly heavily locked down IT policy (we have to follow government guidelines on security), and I'm certain it's some IT policy item causing this behaviour.

It's a massive pain as, 9 times out of 10 when a user has forgotten their password, we aren't able to reset it remotely because the radio is off.

Does anyone have any idea on the policy item that controls this behaviour?

That isn't an IT Policy. It is how the device is. If the battery gets below 5%, the wireless radio will turn off. It will not turn back on automatically when charged. The best thing you can do is educate your users to keep their devices charged.

We have the same behaviour here and we pinpointed it to the IT policy

"Content Protection Strength"

If you set that to default and then switch content protection off on the device, the radio will stay switched on after a device reset.

But we would prefer to have it stay on with Content Protection enabled as well.

There is also a difference between resetting the device and a complete battery drain. With the battery drain, the devices radio will always stay off.

Our issue is really with full battery drain.

I know that the handset will switch radio off when the battery gets very low. However, I am sure that back in the day, when all our handsets were on the default IT policy, the radio would switch back on automatically when the handset was charged.

Am I wrong in this?

No, the user will have to manually turn the wireless radio back on.

You are wrong in this. Once charged back up, the BlackBerry will recall the last known state it was in. Hence, the wireless is turned off.
