I have a BlackBerry Bold 9000 and a BlackBerry Bold 9700 sitting side by side--both on AT&T network. The 9700 has 3G at 5 bars. The 9000 has only EDGE at 4 bars. Both phones are set to 3G & 2G in Mobile Network Options. The 9700 consistently connects to 3G whereas the 9000 will not. Outside of the area I am currently located, the 9000 has no problems connecting to 3G.

Does the Bold 9700 have better hardware? software? which allows it to connect to 3G in more situations.

If I upgrade the Bold 9000 to 5.0, would that improve 3G reception?

Yeah, might be a problem with the sim cards.

I swapped sim cards. The Bold 9000 was able to hold on to 3G better but with only 1 bar. Interestingly, the Bold 9700 achieved 3G 5 bars with the Bold 9000 sim card.

It does seem like the newer sim card is having an impact on the 9000. But why isn't the 9700 affected by the older sim? It seems like the 9700 has much better reception.
