Default New BES User Questions....

Please Login to Remove!

Although I've had a BES blackberry provided by my company for several years, my personal blackberry has always been on BIS. I've just done the Enterprise Activation and its working away. I have a few questions once that's done:

- Can I still have a BIS connection also? When I look at the Manager Connections -> Service Status, it shows that I have both a BIS and BES connection? It would be useful for me if I could connect to my Gmail email via BIS.
- Is it ok to restore specific files/databases using the Blackberry Desktop backup tool? For example my bookmarks and some application settings?
- I have imported my old outlook.pst file onto my Exchange Server - I assume the enterprise activation will ensure my tasks, memos & contacts get copied onto my Blackberry?

Thanks for your help.

Normally, your IT department should be able to answer these questions... but here we go.

If your company's policy allows to have a BIS account on the same Blackberry, it is possible. Normally you would initiate the BIS connection through your carrier's BIS page.

This might be tricky, because once you BES activate your device, many databases are under wireless control and cannot be restored. Also, some companies have policies that forbid the use of the Desktop Manager completely.

Yes, but there is a pre-population limit for e-mails (upto 750 mails or 14 days - whatever comes first). This limit could be different for your company depending on what your BES IT person has set it to.

Wirelessly posted

Thanks for the responses. As you said I haven't been able to restore my dbs as its restricted. I can deal with all the others, but I had a lot of browser bookmarks. Anyone have any clever ideas other than emailing the page addresses individually?

I use opera mini on my bes blackberry. If you can install 3rd party apps, Opera allows you to sync speed dial pages/bookmarks with any other install of opera, whether on a phone or a different pc. You have to create an account with opera (free), you would just log into your account on any device and all you bookmarks will be sync'd. Of course the initial time you will have to import bookmarks to opera from your pc. hope that makes sense.

The only solution I see is to temporarily switch of Automatic Wireless Backup, restore the bookmarks from the backup and then switch Automatic Wireless Backup on again. Your BES admin must help you with that.
