So I was shown a helpful hint from the Verizon people over the weekend and thought I would share it. I was complaining about how the Tour seems to lag and he showed me a way to turn off everything thats running in the background. I have been doing this every once in a while and it helps.

Here's what you do:

ALT L
ALT G
ALT L
ALT G

In that order.

Then a window pops up showing all of the running apps.

You then hit the BB button to the left of the track ball and select clear log. then select delete.

It turns off everything that's running in the BG except of course the OS.

It makes the phone run smoother for me.

This is a good tip to clear up memory but it does not stop all applications from running in the background.

They will still be running in the background. You can verify this for yourself. Open some applications, such as Opera Mini, FaceBook, etc.

Press Alt + Escape (key to the right of the trackball) to see all the running applications. Then press Alt + L,G,L,G and clear the logs as stated above.

Then press Alt + Esc again, and the same applications will still be running.

Also, this command doesn't really show you the running apps. This is the device event log. It's a great advanced troubleshooting tool.

The best ways to see running apps is the Alt-Esc method listed above, or in BB OS > 4.7, pressing & holding the Blackberry key also brings up the task switcher.

... and not to rain on anyone's parade... but the event log is relatively small. Clearing it isn't going to free up large amounts of memory. It's barely noticeable in most cases.
