Default Is EDGE "unlimted" G3 service?

Please Login to Remove!

I ran across this article a couple of weeks ago about "unlimited" G3 services from Verizon, Sprint, and Cingular.

I'm assuming EDGE is Cingular's name for the high-speed G3 service.

From the article:

If you're tempted by what some cellular operators are calling "unlimited" 3G cellular data service, read the fine print.

Three U.S. cellular operators that currently offer fixed-price 3G service -- Verizon Wireless, Cingular and Sprint -- typically use terms like "unlimited" in their marketing material to describe the nature of your access. However, a close look at the fine print makes it clear that the cellular operators are putting significant limits on their so-called unlimited service.

Edge is NOT true G3, it only gives data rates of about 300K. I had an edge card for my notebook. I now have vzw broadband (PC Card and 7250) and I get about 700K-1.1MB thruput on it. This is TRUE G3!

No EDGE is not 3G service, its a half way point between. 3G for Cingular will be UMTS/HSPDA which will allow voice/data at the same time. Essentially making a call and shooting off an email. Granted it will be a little while before we see a Blackberry with this technology in it.

Techcially if you are getting speeds of 300K it is "3G". Here is one defintion from webopeida:

T-Mobile doesn't advertise Edge as 3G. They call it 2.5G. EVDO is about 2.5 times faster than Edge. I only get about 170-200kbs on my edge card. I sent it back for Verizon's EVDO.

I only posted the "technical" definition of 3G. EVDO will obivously blow it out. I love my Sprint EVDO card.
