Default Calendar sync during EA fails, but mail is ok

Please Login to Remove!

We have a BES for Exchange 2003 4.1.6 and for most users, it works like a charm. Done many EA's and all goes well without issues.

However there is 1 user where the EA syncs for emails and contacts /addressbook, but NOT the calendar. Only *some* recurring appointments get synced, but most of the calendar is totally empty. And in OL there are lots of appointments! User has BB Curve 8900. User has many appointments and larger mailbox than others.

Many actions were done:
- wiped BB, delete & readd user, new EA (several times, always same result)
- delete & undelete service books
- delete servicebooks, resend from BES
- CDO.DLL was 1 version different, I copied the most up to date CDO.DLL to BES and re-registered it
- another wipe & EA, no luck
- disabled wireless calendar sync, enabled, no luck.
- new created appointments gets synced perfectly (both ways). But the prepopulation of the calendar still fails.
- investigated LOGS and found some entries about the device initiating CalenderSlowSync commands that later fail.
--> what is calendarSlowSync and how can I turn it off?

Trying to get in touch with RIM but it's not easy (no direct contract so we have to contact telecom provider first, but they're not really fast).

I'm completely stuck here and have no more clues. User is CIO and not happy with his empty calendar. Any clues??

thanks!

This behavior is in a KB that I can't find at the moment . . .but the fix is to EA the device and let that finish. Then open Calendar, Menu->Options. Select Desktop (but do not open it) and type RSET (not case sens). This will ask if you want to replace the calendar from the server, choose Yes and off you go. Obviously that will nuke anything on the device's calendar so back that up prior if needed.

I have had to export (backup), delete and import (restore) the calendar from the mail client and it fixed my users issue.

+1 to that.

Alternatively you could attempt a wired activation.

Does wired activation fix a corrupt old format entry?

No, absolutely not. But if a calendar entry is large or coverage is mediocre and doesn't get processed properly I've seen a wired activation function as a work around.

With OTA functions being promoted so much, I wonder how many never try wired when running into this isue.

I'm guessing only people that don't know it is an effective solution to the problem.

I have been able to work around it so far, but it is nice to know I can fall back on it.

Thanks for all your feedback,

we have tried the following:

- run RSET command on Calendar options: no luck, calendar stays empty

- wired EA: no luck, calendar stays empty

the calendar size is 57MB
are there any calendar size restrictions set during EA??

when I check the logs, during a calendar sync it find (and skips) all the calendar entries of 2007 and 2008 but it never seems to be able to get to the entries of 2009. Somehow it seems like the sync process "times out" when it reaches the calendar items of april 2009. As a result: only older, recurring appointments, are being synced to the BB.

Any thoughts??

There might be an attacmnet in the notes field preventing it from syncing.

I have seen it happen in the notes field in contacts with a few users.

Hi all, i thought I post the solution of my issue here, it's a tendency on forums that you always find someone else having the same issue as you, but never mentioning the final acceptable solution to it...

so here we go:
I found the cause of the error for at least 1 of 3 users that were experiencing the issue. Cannot confirm for the 2 others because they didn't want us to perform another EA :

recurring meetings that did not have an end date set, prevented the calendar from syncronizing!!

I did many EA's to filter out the exact cause, and I found out that:

- when deleting all recurring appointments with no end date set in the outlook calendar, while performing the EA, the service "CALENDAR" was changing status from 'initializing' to '51/101' to 101/101 (100%).
Afterwards: the calendar was fully synced!

- when adding the recurring appointments again in the OL calendar, perform EA: the service "calendar" was NOT listed! Afterward the EA had completed, calendar was empty. Obviously: because no calendar sync service was started.

- when setting and end date to all recurring appointments with no end date (caution: this causes all exeptions of the recurring meetings to be reset!), the "calendar" service was again listed int he EA services list, and afterwards the calendar was fully synced.

Never had this issue before on any of the older devices, only on 8900 + KPN + BES 4.1.6.

Users still not happy about revoked recurring meetings but hey: at least they got a filled calendar...

hope this helps for anyone out there,
cwi
