Question Why do you need Desktop Manager?

Please Login to Remove!

I've used BlackBerry devices for a number of years (8700, 8800, now 8330) associated to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) - I initiated a process at our company awhile back to move away from mandating Desktop Manager (DM) to activate and synchronize and do everything OTA.

Every now and then I'll see a thread where someone asks how to transfer a flie to the BB device and usually the answer is DM. I don't do that - I just plug in the USB cable, get prompted to enable mass media mode and transfer.

I know some applications require DM to load (as they don't have an OTA loader); other than that - and assuming you are on BES - is there a reason to use Desktop Manager?

Thanks.

I haven't seen recommendations to use DM for transferring files. I'll bet most people drag and drop. I just use microsoft media player to sync up podcasts and music; maybe others do, too.

As far as reasons to use DM if you are on a BES, there are some, I've seen, who sync to a personally owned computer in addition to their BES account. That would be one reason, valid or not, I don't know.

You also need DTM loaded to be able to USB charge from the computer.

You need the DM to do backup and restore.

I'm also guessing that if you want to synchronize your device to Outlook without BES you're going to need to launch Desktop Manager...

Only time you will need to use DM to transfer files is if you do not have a media card and need to move the file to the device memory.. Not really recommended.

The only other purpose of the Desktop Manager in a BES settings is to do a full backup, OTA backup does not backup everything. You can also change your email setting from the DM as well. As well as sync any digital certificates you may need.

That's just off the top of my head.

Thanks - that's what I thought. I don't have a real for a backup, when I get new devices I just resynch to BES and everything is restored. Items on my memory card are also on my home PC or laptop. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Thanks again.

The backup utility in DM is also handy for selectively clearing databases on the device.
