It appears they turned it off immediately, and made no calls and did not use any data at all.
They got access to the data that was on the handheld as my wife didn't use a password, but once they turned it off they would have had to input a SIM card PIN in order to access the network services again...
Regardless, we got a new Pearl today and a new SIM card and restored all her data.
From now on we both have device passwords in addition to the SIM password, and I think I will install roblock on each of them.
