RIM is saying March 09 for the official release. If you do a search, there are a bunch of threads that get into more details about it.

Yes, an App Store countdown app would be very good right about now.

the question is, will the stuff be mostly free or will we have to pay out the waazoo for these apps? I hope that they have a program setup similar to Cydia for the iPhone where they get a lot of free apps. VZW makes you pay a lot as it is

I would imagine that the VZW app store will be mostly pay apps. The RIM app store will probably have a decent mix of both.

I just hope they don't take too much time to roll out the compatibility for all the devices...

Isn't it suppose to be compatible with Storm 4.7 upon release?

It better be available for the Storm! I mean, we already have the Application Center, which is a joke, but I would like to get OTA programs on the fly instead of finding out about them in RSS feeds, then going from link to link to get them.

RIM plans to launch the application storefront in March 2009 and BlackBerry application developers can begin submitting their applications and content for inclusion in the storefront in December 2008. The storefront will allow developers to set their own prices for applications and developers will retain 80 percent of the revenue generated from their applications. RIM is working with PayPal, a leading global online payment service, to provide consumers with a convenient and trusted way to pay for applications within the new application storefront, right from their BlackBerry smartphone. Organizations that have deployed BlackBerry® Enterprise Server or BlackBerry® Professional Software will retain control of what applications can be downloaded to BlackBerry smartphones within their corporate deployments.

Not sure what the latest rumors but It's initial was suppose to be for Storm/ OS 4.7+..

Not if that has changed at all since I haven't heard too much about it recently.

Hmmm, I noticed a few things in some of these posts that made me raise an eyebrow. While I am aware of the RIM Application Storefront are you also saying that there will be carrier specific Application Storefronts?

RPJOHS stated "I would imagine that the VZW app store will be mostly pay apps. The RIM app store will probably have a decent mix of both."

I think thats a terrible idea, personally. Lets keep it to one Storefront I say, by RIM.

Also, I just read an article covering the "success" of the iPhone App Store and how most free applications are used on average 1 time on the downloaders phone. Basically, and I am totally paraphrasing here, the overall "success" of the iPhone App Store is misleading and leads to the question: Are most of their apps complete junk? Being a tad biased for BB devices I would certainly say YES! I'm sure the fart app is a hoot and all, but is it really anything a person over the age of 15 would want on their phone?

I just hope we see top quality apps. I am willing to pay - I personally laugh when I see review sites like berryreview/com and others claiming a $15 price for an app is too high. Lets just go over the cost of M$ Windows compatible applications.

Chris

P.S. I know we have a fart and light saber app too...So, no need to respond with BBs useless apps too, I know we have a few...

I believe thier will be a RIM App store and a carrier Specific App Store...

VZW most likely will have pay for apps, but that can spawn a whol new thread in itself lol.

Look at the target of the iPhone (and related Apps) compared to the target of the BlackBerry (and it's apps).. BlackBerries have been aimed at a completely different consumer group compared to the iPhone, granted they are beginning to change that up with the Storm/Pearl Flip.

BB Apps will always be sperate from the iPhone as far as functionality/productibilty. After RIM allows Push content into the BIS world it should get alot cooler.

My Curve has been flaky and I was seriously considering an iPhone because of the apps. I am glad I found this thread and the thread with honest reviews by former iPhone owners who returned to the BB. I'm sticking with my BB.

Thanks guys for preventing me from wasting a lot of money!

I don't think we even have a speculated date... It's pretty much whenever RIM says so...

Really... It has been long enough. Not that you can't find stuff out and about... but a central repository can only help...
