i was just drooling over the colorware designer for the storm myself! however, i've already had to replace my storm once, and it would REALLY suck to pay $164 (my custom creation, hehe) to have the colorware applied and then have to get my device replaced again at some point. Too bad the pieces aren't transferable.
wow perfect timing i just ordered a new housing 2days ago for my storm to do it up and this website lets me preview my color theme(wish i had that in the past with other projects) ill be sure to post pics the curing process about week but i should be done by the end of the month
Very cool... Impractical for most users though, RIM/VZW should look into having people do custom orders prior to purchase... now that I have my device, I'm not sending it to them for 2-3 weeks or more...
I'm sure ColorWare will adopt they're Rapid Return service for the Storm soon enough. 2-3 weeks is definitely too long without my new toy! It is tempting though. Color suggestions?

I have to agree with ProwlingTiger. Give them a few weeks and they will have the process perfected, and they will start offering the RapidReturn service.
I had my slider spray painted and it looked great for about 2 weeks. After normal wear the phone looks terrible. Get a colored sleeve if you crave such. A colored sleeve is the same color throughout and won't look crappy even with a few nicks here and there.
That's a very cool and very pricey idea. If it's as good as they say it is I don't think it'll chip or come off at all. But it's very expensive, almost as much as the phone itself if you want different colors for the front/sides/back. I got laser cut stickers on a sheet for my pearl for next to nothing (fleabay) that actually lasted awhile. You can mix and match those and make it look pretty cool too. Not the same of course but hey...parts is parts.
I am surprised there aren't any companies yet making skins in different colors that can be applied much like the protection skins made by Zagg and others. This to me would seem to be the best of both worlds. A person could change the colors by applying the skin and if the unit needed repairing or replaced, remove the skin and send it in. You would trash the skin but the cost would be much less than a custom paint job.
The short story is that I acquired a computer case from a Microsoft affliliate with the Colorware custom coating. He also possessed an iPod with the X2 coating as well. I ultimately was given the opportunity to have the X2 coating applied my GSM slider (a phone I utilize while doing business in eastern Europe). I am sure it was an exception and not a service the average Joe has access to. Maybe even hastily applied during an uncoventional procedure.
Now in all honesty, the phone was handled roughly - pocket carried and casually tossed on the counter. I wouldn't treat my Storm similarly. Although the coating withstood impact without chipping, the scratching made the finish look very worn and unappealing.
