I am new to BB and just got the Storm. Sorry I know the answer is buried here somewhere, but I'm anxious to get started with this thing. I'm on VZW network.

Question: Why is everyone using Gmail for their BB. Do I need to subscribe to Gmail to make this think receive/tx email correctly? I only have Hotmail at the moment, but could sign up if necessary. Any other email providers that are as good??

Gmail delivery will be almost instant! Yes you will need to sign up for a gmail account if you don't already have one.

Gmail and Yahoo mail are free email services that are true push email just like if you were connected to a corporate server (just no wireless calendar/contact syncing).

All other email accounts get checked in 15 minute intervals until email is found, then the account will be checked every 3 minutes until 9 minutes go by with no new email. Once that happens, it goes back to checking every 15 minutes.

I second the motion, gmail is almost instant. I have a hotmail & live account and they are a little slower, plus the spam guard on gmail is awesome!

both hotmail AND aol/aim also offer "instant email notification"

Not bad news.

What I should have added is that the blackberry.net is push also. To the best of my knowledge, AOL does not do push. Hotmail does, but only if you pay for the plus. Basic Hotmail may or may not even work with BIS depending on whether or not it's an old account.
