I would hope so, considering the Storm should be RIM's flagship phone! Even though it's not quite acting like it just yet....

Not backwards. I know for a fact the Bold comes with a 624MHz processor. I have read for the Storm that a 624MHz and 528MHz processor are possible.

The Bold flies, despite what processor it is packing.

So which is it 624MHz or 528MHz. Most of your sources say 624MHz.

The Bold has the faster processor.
CDMA (which Verizon uses in the US) limits the available processors.

When the GSM only version of the STORM is released mid 2009 it will have the faster processor.

It is also said the reason for no WiFi is the limited processor.
