Hi - I've just upgraded from an 8830 to a 9000. In general I'm very happy with the new device, but I've got one hugely annoying frustration that I'm hoping someone can help me work around.

My companies' BES IT policy requires a password lock on the device that is almost always on if the phone is idle for more than a few minutes.

On my past devices, I can simply start typing in the password from the lock screen and it will unlock pretty easily.

However, without fail on my 9000, half-way thru typing in my password (in the exact same spot every time) it pops up an incredibly annoying "! Press SEND to start Emergency call" prompt that screws up my place in the password. It usually takes me 2 or 3 tries to get the password typed in properly with this constant interruption.

Incidentally, this prompt happens right in the middle of a number sequience in my password so i suspect it thinks i might be trying to dial a number while locked?

Anyone else seeing this and have a fix?

I do have the latest FW that my provider supports - it's an AT&T and i'm on .167. I would certainly upgrade to a newer release if it fixed this issue. I've seen some chatter on .168 and even .185 but they hadn't been released by AT&T when last I checked.

Yeah that is strange. I normally just start typing my password and the form comes up. I have never had it blip to an emergency call. Now question when you lock your device do you place it in a belt holster? And if so is it an OEM one or an after market one? If it's an after market one it might not have the sleeper magnet and as you are pulling out the device it might click the pearl and click on emergency call but software is slow to react and you can type a few first.. thats a stab in the dark but possible...

Thanks - unfortunately I don't use a holster at all so I don't think this is the issue.

One thing I have noticed - the emergency call prompt ALWAYS comes up as soon as I type the 3rd number in a row that's in the middle of my password. Not to get too personal here, but my password is some letters, followed by some numbers, followed by some letters... It's always on the 3rd number in that part of the password string that the e-call prompt comes up. I think the software must thing that i'm trying to dial from the lock screen, even though i'm in the middle of typing in the password... I had this same password on my 8830 that I upgraded from yesterday, so this is clearly a new 'feature'.

It sounds like your numbers are recognized as an emergency number..ie 911. There are a couple numbers series you should not use in your password because of this. FOr example if your password was "un911lock" after the second 1 it's going to think you are trying to dial 911 and prompt you to complete the call. This is so anyone can dial 911 from your phone in an emergency. Not sure this is the case with your phone but you might want to look up what numbers are used for 911 on the device. I think the other main one is 112.

I don't believe that will have an effect as Speed Dial doesn't work when the device is locked. I wish there was a setting to only allow speed dial, I hate having to unlock to call a common number. I also had my Curve setup with a PW that included keys I used for Speed Dial and never ran across this problem.

I would agree from what the others are saying. I did some testing on my Bold and the second it see 911 anywhere in my password it prompts me with "Press Send to start emergency call". This was even though I was only hitting the letters and not the numbers. The phone is smarter then we though. I would test setting your password to 'simple' or something with just text and letters that stay away from the 911 keys. I looks like there is a number in there that it thinks is a emergency number and you are trying to dial it and its trying to help.

Interesting - based on this thread I have determined that it is a specific sequence of numbers that is bringing up the emergency prompt... in my case the numbers '08' which are in the middle of my password cause the emergency prompt. I can't for the life of me figure out why '08' would indicate that i might be trying to make an emergency call, but seems like that's the behavior.

It even does it if i press '0x' without the alt key to bring up the 8.

I guess in the interim, i'll just have to change it to something different.

Hmm that's interesting because I just tried this... I locked my phone, and started typing my password and try and recreate the problem and it didn't work for me... I tried typing like asdf911asdf, asdf112asdf, asdf08asdf and none of those brought up any popups for me. I also tried doing the alt thing and putting those as actual numbers and not the letters, but still got no popup.

I'm using the latest software tho (4.6.0.190) so maybe that's why?

I get that dialog box if I try to type the keys that correspond to "911", "112", or "08" in my password. My guess is that the numbers 08 are used in an emergency number somewhere. A little research reveals that 08 is used in several countries as some type of emergency number.

You're going to need to change your password. Don't bother updating the OS; it's supposed to do this.

i would have changed the password the moment it got on my nerves, no need to go through all the trouble, if my password had 08 ill just change it to 80.
unless my BES requires a certain password, but why would they give you a password with an emergency call numbers.
