Default My carrier finally busted me for using my Blackberry

Please Login to Remove!

For about 4 months I was using my blackberry pearl 8100 (unlocked and imported) with FIDO using the company's Unlimited Internet $7 add-on. It was great. Google Maps, Opera Mini, WebMessenger, everything worked.

Next thing I know I get a bill for $230, and another for $750. Nearly all of it was for data usage which is "not covered". Apparently Blackberry users aren't allowed to take part in that since Fido doesn't carry Blackberry smartphones. Stupid carrier.

Anyway. I can't find a way around this. I LOVE my Pearl. It was a christmas gift from my girlfriend (who, literally, had to fight for it). Looking at other local carriers which use sim cards (namely Rogers), I found that it would be cheaper and more in my interest to just grab an iphone (yeah, and be one of 1000 other idiots, I know, ugh!).

Does the blackberry use a different data transfer medium than the locked fido phones? How come they didn't detect I was using another smart phone for the first 4 months? Anything I can do here to avoid the 5 cents / kb price they are charging me if I keep the blackberry? Anyone else had this problem?

Yea, get the BB Data Plan, much cheaper in the long run, as you discovered.

Sorry about the absurd cost, but there are literally hundreds of posts here warning against just that.

Hey J. Yep, I saw all the warnings. They just didn't apply at the time: I added it unlimitede i-net to a package I already had and it only ended up being $5... then one day they started to bill me, doh! At least I was credited for all of that.

The BIS packages dont seem to offer much in terms of data at a price I can afford (uni. student budgeting). I'm going to look at that $30/month for the 6 Gigs (fido offers it too).

Still no ideas why they only noticed/began billing me after 4 months?

2X ouch! Years ago, my daughter ran up a $750 phone bill talking with her boy friend. She was in a "roaming" zone. Of course the bill was paid, and the phone plan expanded to cover the entire USA, Guam, Turks, and Caicos. Phone companies, love em, leave em, or pay through the wazoo.

Damn are you serious?? I gave in and got my Curve because for the first time in forever my contract with AT&T was 2 weeks from ending and it was the first time I hadnt had to get a new phone and renew it..

Maybe I shouldve waited and checked out the other providers hah.
I bet I couldve gotten a silver Curve too since AT&T was completely cleaned out of em when I ordered!!

Prices here really are absolutely ridiculous.
$60 / month will get you around 200 minutes, eve/week, and only 400 MB of data transfer

Fido is saying I can get 6 GIGs for an extra $30/month, however, my Pearl is not supported. As I have a tendancy to ring up $700 worth of internet usage fees, I'm considering giving the pearl to my father

I'm pretty sure I mentioned I was credited for the internet data charges. I got $180 back for the first bill, $680 back for the second bill.

Yes, I'm wondering if it makes sense for me to lock into a 3 year contract with Fido or Rogers knowing there will be 4 new companies entering the market, and rumors of the government trying to lower the costs of cell phone fees: Prentice hints at reining in cellphone companies : News : Tech & Gadgets : Sympatico / MSN

Is it worth waiting a year??
