Yup, reading these posts and seeing that all carriers out there have correctly defined "unlimited data", all but Rogers that is, makes me realize how far behind the times Rogers is on this particular point. Do they have some sort of vendetta against us small guys when they sock it to us like that? What's the point they are trying to make? I realize that they have a virtual monopoly in certain areas, but why gouge customers to such an extend? I don't want any handouts by the way, but Rogers doesn't even give us the option to buy more bandwidth at a decent rate. I pay C$7 for each MB above 25MB. Also, since I am on a pure data plan, I pay $1 for each call I make. No i'm not kidding you. Countless Rogers customers have pleaded with them for ages to give us the opportunity to buy extra bandwidth at a fair rate, but to no avail. They just don't listen.

That's b/c SMS messages don't show up correctly. You can call Nextel and have them disable the SMS ability w/o affecting anything else.
I pay roughly $130 for phone, unlimited data and Telenav.

Overages are something I'm concerned about as well.
I just got my 7100 today and I'm changing my Data Plan tomorrow.
I'm with Fido due to the fantastic deal I have on the voice plan. Unfortunately their data plans leave much to be desired. I can choose between 500kb a month or 5MB a month. No unlimited and if they did, I'm sure I couldn't afford it.
Does anybody know how much data IM clients use? I was planning on using IM a bit but don't want it to inflate my bill to rediculous levels.

Dave, 5MB/month is very little. I have used more than that in one day, but keep in mind that my bandwidth usage (50 to 60MB/month) is at the high end of the typical blackberry user. Does Fido give you a "free data for the first x months" type deal? If that's the case, then just install the IM client of your choice and test it out.
Mark Rejhon posted this at some other location (i'll pm you the link):
"Verichat from www.verichat.com is a really good Instant Messaging Program superior to the one built into the 7100. It uses data instead of SMS messages, and if you run it 24/7 you will be consuming approximately 1 megabyte per day, or about 30 megabytes a month."

wow 5 mb is not alot at all I went over that the very first day I had my bb if you install anything over the air you are toast right away. the im clients will consume alot of bandwidth and battery.

Welcome to Canada. Even Rogers data plans don't have an unlimited (their 'unlimited' is $60/month for 25MB hehehe). This is a major burn for me because I'm going to have to cancel my HipTop plan which is $20/mos. for unlimited data.
Because my HipTop was stolen, I'm going to try and sweet talk them into a deal. Technically my BB would cost them less because I'm going to be paying somebody else for my online PIM and mail management.
I'll let you know how badly I get hosed.
UPDATE
I just called Fido and they blocked my every attempt to get a good deal. I've switched to a $5 for 500KB plan for the time being just so I'm not wasting money on my HipTop plan while I figure something else out. I'll have to filter my email very carefully until I do and turn on the Firewall.
I can't get the browser to work on this thing anyhow...anybody know how to get a service book from a provider who doesn't sell BlackBerries?

Fido and Rogers merged a while ago. I'm assuming that the the Blackberry you bought would be supported by Rogers as well as far as service books is concerned.
If you are going to IM with your blackberry and if Fido won't give you more than 5MB per month, try to ditch them if you can, and switch to Rogers.

nessenj, I just signed up for that one online and for some reason they threw in another 100 free minutes per month forever. 400 total for $99 w/ free incoming + nationwide DC, and unlimited data.
Self-employed is great for nearly everything in my life, but it would be nice to qualify for some of the nice corp discounts I see people talking about...
