Hello,
I just got my 8220 without a data plan and have been able to set up the phone to work the bb browser over wifi. I have the feature enabler but have not been able to get any other 3rd party applications to work. I have tried gmail, google maps, google sync, and google calendar.
My campus at school is completely covered by wifi, unfortunately AT&T have bought the rights to the entire campus and blocked all other carriers. In short, i need to use wifi.
I have been following this and other forums but i'm still confused about a few things.
-Do i need to temporarily get the service plan to get some of these apps working on wifi?
-What applications are functional on wifi only?
I realize I have a different phone but aside from the apps(which everyone seems to have trouble with) everything else has worked just as described here. Please let me know if there is anything i'm doing wrong or need to do. Thanks.
Oh and here are my current service books if that will help:
Provisioning [OTASL]
Provisioning [PROVISIONING]
T-Mobile USA WAP 2 Browser config
T-Mobile USA WAP2.0 transport
T-Mobile 5 click [BrowserConfig]
BC_Virtual_Preload_Facebook
MMS Config 2.0 [WPTCP]
T-Mobile USA WAPTransport
Wap Push Config
Wi-Fi TCP/IP Browser
Wi-Fi TCP/IP Transport

The apps you mention do NOT work over wifi only. You need a data plan. Getting one temporarily to get them to work will do just that. It will get them to work temporarily. There are only a few apps out there that work over a wifi connection alone.

Thanks.

I added BB data plan for a couple of days, installed a few apps and then turned the data plan off and added the BB feature enabler (so I'm getting 'UMA' connectivity).

What works over wifi:
Hotspot Browser
MilkSync

What doesn't:
Gmail app - receive error when refreshing "this program requires a working data connection"
Google Maps
Viigo
Opera Mini

Any suggestions on how to get these other apps working over wifi are much appreciated.

Default APN charges?

Ok, so i just want some clarification. If I have an 8320 with wifi enabled and i enter wap.voicestream.com into the APN field under options, will there be additional charges on my tmobile bill? No Data Plan, only WiFi.

I just got the Bold and am confused about the wi-fi. I have a home network that it finds and connects to, and the phone lets me get on the internet and go to web pages after i have clicked on the "hot spot log in". Is this considered free? Or will I be charged for this?

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

First, you probably have an 8320 or 8820 as there is no 8830 for TMobile.

Second, if you have no data plan then you need to go to Options >Advanced Options >Browser and make the wifi or hotspot browser the default browser.

Dear All,

great post I am happy that I found this here, I have similar issue I got blackberry from my company just like the phone. No BIS no BES and unfortunatelly even no data plan. I have wifi router at home and I browsing on the net via wifi connection. I tried several times to setup whatever e-mail or messenger browser via wifi I always get stop either due to no connetion or due to not having permission from my phone network provider.
Is there any setup that I missed?
My book servicess are:
WAP Browser [BrowserConfig]
Orange MMS2[WPTCP]
Wap2 Transport [WPTCP]
Wap Push Orange SKm[WAPPushConfig]
Wi-Fi TCP/IP Browser [BrowserConfig]
Wi-Fi TCP/IP Transport [WPTCP]

Do I need something else if I wanna setup any application running through WIFI?

Thanks to all

Default It works for me

I have BB8220 and I do not have any sort of data plan thru TMO. All I have is wifi UMA for data usage. Here is a breakdown of steps that you need to follow to Gmail app get going.
1) Subscribe to $25 data plan at Tmobile website. This will download the necessary service book entries to your BB device.
2) Call Customer service (speak blackberry in voice prompt and it will take you to the right department). Ask CSR to enable "Blackberry feature enabler in your phone.
3) Restart phone.
4) Check if Gmail is working fine (it should as you still have data plan on).
5) Cancel data plan (daily charge is about 80 cents).
6) check your Gmail app again.
My BB browser is set to use Hotspot Browser, so it works without any problem. So does Opera mini and GMaps/Gsync.
It works fine for me. hope it will do the same for you too.

Quite true...the 8830 is a CDMA device. You CAN have any GSM BlackBerry on T-Mobile, provided it's unlocked.

Default browsing

I know there are directions to access the browser

which start as options> advanced options, but I don't see advanced options anywhere and I've been trying to get this to work for some time now.
