Default 2-way synchronization

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

In the past, I have setup my Blackberry 8220 with my Hotmail account by using the TMobile BIS page and by just putting in my username and password. I am not positive, but I believe this setup is based on POP. Because of this setup, I do not have 2-way synchronization. If I delete email from the Hotmail server while sitting at my computer, I must delete it again on my phone (however the reverse works fine).

I realize that the Blackberry web page does say that Hotmail does not sync both ways. However, that page is old. I have seen many articles stating that Exchange ActiveSync can now be used with Hotmail which provides 2-way synchronization by setting it up to run through m.hotmail.com.

In order to change any details on the BIS setup for TMobile, you must actually put in an email address that is fake or has an error so it does not go through properly. Once you do this and it cannot setup the account, you get the option to provide additional settings. If you click on that, you can specify either a POP/IMAP setup or an Exchange setup. I have tried setting up ActiveSync by selecting the Exchange setup, but it appears that TMobile BIS only allows Exchange use if you are using Microsoft Outlook Web Access.

I have several questions about this:

1. In general, can Exchange ActiveSync be used for 2-way synchronization on mobile devices?

2. Why does TMobile not allow this setup to work and only allow an Outlook Web Access account to work through Exchange?

3. Is this just an issue with my phone since it has older software? Does a newer version of TMobile BIS allow this to work on newer Blackberry phones?

Thanks!

You can't use the Exchange option unless you are actually using email that is actually on an Exchange Server and you are active on the BES. Are you on a BES?

I have BES for my work email. How would you setup BES for Hotmail?

The BlackBerry does not support Exchange Activesync. You are trying to enter this through Enterprise activation, which is not just for Exchange, but used for Novell GroupWise, as well as Lotus Domino.

You cannot set Hotmail up this way. It needs to be setup via the BIS.

But I am still confused. There is an Exchange option on the BIS page. I can't setup Hotmail via that?

Then what is "Exchange ActiveSync"? It is now supported by Hotmail.

Yes, it is support by Hotmail. However, BlackBerry devices do not support ActiveSync.

iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, WebOS all support ActiveSync, BlackBerrys do not.

True, and I was going to mention this, but seeing as he as a 8220, I didn't think it was relevant.
