Default BES not sync'ing Contacts, Notes, etc.

Please Login to Remove!

Hello;

First, I've read through many similar posts and have tried the suggestions that I found - no luck. I thought I'd now ask directly.

I am the IT Admin for a small company, and we've recently started using Blackberry's with Blackberry Enterprise Server for Exchange. For the most part it works fine, but I've had some complaints that users (at least three that I know of, and I am one of them!) are not getting their contacts, tasks, or notes synchronized wirelessly. Email works fine, and so does calendar (though I have heard a complaint about it not being 100% reliable ...).

I have been able to confirm on my own BB that tasks, memo's, and the address book DO NOT sync wirelessly. So, I make a good guinea pig when trying things out and if I find a solution for me, then I'll attempt the same for my users.

Here is my set-up:
Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2 (w/ Exchange 2003)
BES 4.1.2 (Bundle 47) (installed on the same server as Exchange)
BB 8310 (Red Curve), Carrier: AT&T

I've noted that when in contacts, memo's, and address book, under [Options] there IS NO "wireless sync=yes/no" option. There is for mail and for calendar.

I've deleted all service books for Desktop and then resending them from the BES, and this did not change anything. I've tried clearing those three app's using the Desktop Manager, but they still would not sync wirelessly.

From the BES manager screen, I've selected my own profile and clicked "Edit Profile" and confirmed that all of them are set to "wireless sync = true".

I've also performed [Options]->[Advanced Options]->[Enterprise Activation] and then entered [alt]->CNFG to get to the hidden menu, and tried turning wireless sync off entirely. But, even if I change that option to "NO" and save, as soon as I look at that hidden menu again it's been flipped back to "YES" and nothing changes.

I've also performed a double soft-reset, just in case.

Am I missing something simple? Where would I configure these apps to sync wirelessly if it does not appear in the options menu?

Typically when the wireless sync option is missing from Contacts/Memopad/tasks the Desktop[SYNC] service book is corrcupt. Have you tried reomving/readiing your account on the BES, wiping the device and reactivating? Did you look in the application log or SYNC log?

Sounds like a service book issue as that is what controls the wireless sync option for those applications. I would try reactivating first.

OK, I've deleted my account from BES, then deleted all of the service books from the BB, then re-added my account to the BES, and am now re-activating my BB.

If this works, I'll report so right here.

If this does not work ... then would you tell me how to "wipe the device?" Would I perform that from the handheld or the BES? I have never wiped one before. I know that on my old Treo I could perform a "back to factory defaults" reset ... is this something like that?

Wipe the device could mean a few things to different people.
There's the old "wipe handheld" option by going under Options / Security / General / *click* and Wipe Handheld.

Then there's JL_CMDR. The Holy Grail of burning an OS off a BB. How do you use it? Glad you asked... How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder? - BlackBerryFAQ

Good tool.

Wow, Darth, pulling out the Big Guns with JL_Cmder. That's like skipping the "Triple Dare You" and going straight for the "Triple DOG Dare You", or it's 4th down and a mile and you need a Ray Guy kind of punt.

Runester, I would add that when you remove the user from the BES that remove the info from the mailbox as well, then re-add (if you really need something off the BB do a backup first).

Don't remove service books in an attempt to wipe. Either use Jl_cmder as previously suggested or follow KB14058 - Delete all data from the BlackBerry smartphone using Wipe Handheld

OK, I can officially report - that worked! Thank you for the help!

I created a test task and test memo and then waited for them to sync ... and it took some hours for that happen. I almost gave up ... but it did, eventually, sync. Now I'll be able to roll out that procedure to any employees that have a similar problem.

Again, thank you.

THANK YOU. I'll keep both methods in mind, should it be necessary in the future. And, from some of what I've read on this forum ... it very well may be.
