Mailstreet Users: How to keep Outlook running 24/7?
Hi,
I'm a Mailstreet user, and it takes Outlook about 15-20 seconds to connect to Mailstreet if it wasn't running before.
How do I tell Outlook to stay loaded in memory (i.e. in system tray) even when I exit it? That way, there'd be no delay reconnecting, when I want Outlook to respond more quickly.
I tried using Outlook offline mode (which loads nearly instantly), but that conflicts with the new nifty wireless synchronization feature of BES4, and my offline Outlook addressbook is not updated anymore even when I do a Send/Receive to try to synchronize it with the online version.
What version of Outlook are you using? I use a corporate Exchange server with Outlook 2003. When I minimise outlook it sits in the system tray connected all the time. This functionality is only in Outlook 2003 afaik
But Mark asked how to keep it resident even after he exits - not when he minimizes it...
I don't think it can be done.
If you keep it resident they you haven't exited. Nothing will keep resident if you exit it (some apps appear to keep resident on exit but don't actually exit they just hide themsevles)...The best option is set the "Hide while minimized" option and when you minimize it will sit in the system tray
I notice when I am running iPaq PocketPC ActiveSync, it forces a hidden copy of Outlook to be running in the background (no icons, no Outlook window). That means, next time I startup Outlook, it's already "connected"
That means there must be a way to write a stubby application that simply initializes an MAPI call of some kind....forcing Outlook to continuously run in the background, even when I exit.
Alternatively, I'd like a third party software program that intercepts my accidental attempts to close Outlook (rather than minimize), and minimizes Outlook instead of closes it.
I don't use Outlook for email (I use Thunderbird for that). Outlook is for PIM only for me. So I frequently exit it, making it somewhat inconvenient at times when it reloads and reinitializes a connection to Mailstreet...
I don't know much about outlook, but would it be possible to set it up in data sources somehow? Kinda like how you setup the SQL connection for BES Manager?
Anyway, it is only the advent of wireless PIM synchronization that I decided to always run Outlook in ONLINE mode instead of OFFLINE mode. (Formerly, I only went into ONLINE mode when installing BlackBerryOS, to make sure I got the BES/Desktop service books installed). That now means I am now prone to the disadvantage of ONLINE is those 20 seconds loading times for Outlook (connection delay).
Not really what it was intended for probably, but I use a visual program called windowblinds. Some of the skins they have utilize a button near the minimize/maximize/close/etc button that will drop the entire window into a tray icon. They have a shareware version you can try out to see if it works for ya.
