Please Login to Remove!

Hi All BES Guru out there!

A friend of mine is running a UNIX based email server...POS 6 or something. Can we setup a BES server in his office and have email from his server redirected to the BES server

the BES is just an add-on for Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino. if you have one of these, then you can have the various mailboxes forwarded to coinciding mailboxes in one of those environments and the BES will redirect as instructed by its setup with those two environments.

so if you had setup on his server and setup in and Exchange environment, and BES was setup with the exchange environment and "John Doe" was a BES user, then it would work. you could have a static mailbox with forwarding setup on the POP3 server or a simple alias that is setup to forward anything addressed to to have an end delivery to (so no mailbox needed on the unix side - uses virtual user tables in sendmail).

Maybe the products from http://www.consilient.com/ are a solution for you.

I just found out that the Email server is called POSTFIX and its running on LINUX! Went through consilient website and couldn't find any product which supports LINUX on BES. I have posted a request onto their website, hope they reply.

In any case, anybody else has any other lead which I could try?

Thanks in advance!

Are you using Exchange or Lotus Domino for enterprise mail?

If you simply have Postfix, then you are SOL for BES functionality.

It does seem like RIM is ignoring a HUGE market which is the SMTP market. There are a whole lot more SMTP/Pop users than Exchange, etc users.

The webclient is a pretty lame solution when the BES could handle this process by itself.

Why is there no support for iCAL and the other calendaring and mail protocol standards ?

I'd be willing to bet RIM hasn't necessarily ignored SMTP-based mail servers, but has just focused it's attention on the more corporate systems (exchange, domino and now groupwise). You'll probably see more conventional support springing up in the next year and maybe even a small business edition at a reduced price for smaller companies that want to mobilize their work force (I'm thinking real-estate firms and maybe construction that have simpler mail systems but would still benefit from BES functionality.
