Default BES - Redundancy/High Availability - Best Practices...?

Please Login to Remove!

so i'm interested in others' HA or redundant environment configurations...? we're about to implement a redundant BES environment, but before i do, i'd like to know what others do just in case there's a better idea.

my plan, as of now, is to have two separate servers - each running the same instance of BES (one down, one active) and SQL 2000. the databases would replicate with each other (is this even needed, since the only real info stored in the database of importance, imo, is the license key and policy information?). i guess thats a rough layout of it, but any other information would be helpful.

i know RIM has talked about backing up the service account mailbox and whatnot...

backup database and mailboxes regularily. This is a givin regardless if you have a BES or not.

I have a hot spare for the people on the "important" BES at my company

It is an exact replica in every way possible to the live BES, pointing to same database (remote SQL) and pointing to the same admin mailbox, installed with the same admin account and same instance name as the live BES. (Same SRP ect.) Services are set to disabled so that they will not automatically start up on a reboot ect.

This way if something were to happen to the live BES I only need logon to the hot spare and turn up the services. No mail lost and up within 30 seconds, Just make sure you dont accidentally turn on both BES at the same time, since they will both be using the same SRP it will likely end up disabled as I learned the hard way.

yeah, i learned the SRP violation the hard way too.

however, with turning up the standby server, i will have to likely be making a call to RIM again to have them clear it (i do not think its possible to go through a complete installation and full updates w/o having the BES online at some point during the process).

a few questions (if you know)...

how often do you backup the database and blackberry service account mailboxes?

on the server instances, say if ours is ICWPBES11 for the current production server, does that have to carry over to the standby server as well - or can it be named like ICWPBES21 (server name, instance one) and have no affect on the users? or is the only info that matters are the SRP Identifier and Auth Key?

We have a dedicated box just for the BES.
We back it up daily, but also wondered about having a mirrored box or running dual boxes.
Any other thoughts from anyone?

Thanks,
