Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
i m using curve 8900.i have vodafone 49 rs. gprs plan(it allows me use 50 mb per month ) activated on my card.
i m not using any blackberry plan from my provider.

No, you only need a data plan and your apn settings.

Most apps will work with APN and WIFI.
the only app that i cant find a solution for is skype.
( IM+ Talk does skype, but at 30EUR, bit dear when you have 4 phones )
the rest can be remedied with 3rd party apps and hacks.

HATEPOLICY, I think you are incorrect. Google is now integrated into BIS and needs a BB data plan for access. All RIM based services require a BB data plan.

Some apps will work with WiFi, not most. SKYPE ONLY works on Verizon BBs. I don't know of any "hack" out there that will make them work.

RIM may have integrated Google in to its services, but Google is independent of RIM as a company and as such does not need to block access via APN!? after all Google want us clicking for stats and adds.

Anyway, Gmail, Google Mobile App, Google Talk, Google Maps, ALL work via APN, they will not work via WIFI!
The above poster i think was asking about them...?
I have no experience with any of the other google apps on there.

Further more, we now run 3 BB's with no BIS plan, all running gmail, gmaps, gapp, gtalk, etc etc

ps. Hack was perhaps a bit of a dramatic word choice, i was referring to the Asian? Btalk/Gtalk/Msn install w/ Psi / Jabba.

To be precise, yes Google is independent of RIM as a corporate entity, but as Dubdub says, many third-party apps for BlackBerry are written to take advantage of the BlackBerry data service features and hence require a BlackBerry data plan.

And what the others say about the various Google products has been my understanding. If you are able to use the current Google Maps, for instance, without a BlackBerry data plan, then you are the exception.

Check the facts?

I have a number of people I've followed over the years saying one thing, and then one person who I don't know saying something different.

So, HATEPOLICY, I say your the one who should put up. "It works" is not satisfactory.

Tell the OP how to fix his/her problem.

Been a while since i was on here,
Here is the hack by Anworm for changing browser config.
Most apps will work via APN but some, like google search need the BB's def. browser.

• For all those using blackberry without a BIS/BES dataplan, they cannot access or use the default blackberry browser. Without access to the browser they wont be able to do an OTA install of apps or install the Blackberry 'AppWorld'.
• In some countries, the Blackberry Dataplan is very costly. So using it to download apps and browsing will burn their pockets. These people will be benefited if they could access Browser using normal GPRS/3G dataplan which is way cheaper.
Follow these steps to do it:

First we need to enable legacy restore mode. To do that:
• Go to Options > Advanced Options > Service Book.
• For QWERTY models hold ALT and press 'S' 'B' 'E' 'B''. For Sure-type (1/2 qwerty) models hold ALT and press 'S' 'S' 'B' 'E' 'B' & for touch screen models hold [!?123] until it show lock icon and press 4 ? 2 ? - means ALT 'S' 'B' 'E' 'B'.
• You will then see the message "Legacy SB Restore Enable".
After that you are free to backup/Restore Service Book on your BlackBerry.

Now download this file:

hxxp://box.net/shared/j6lp6cii8g

It is a backup file(.ipd) which can be used to restore a specific service book. Now follow these steps
• Open Blackberry Desktop Manager.
• Select Backup and Restore, you will see main options, as follows:
• Click Advanced button. In Advanced option, click File. A drop down menu appears and then click Open. Now select the backup file that we downloaded.
• Then select Service Book at the left column and click '>>' button.
• After that, disconnect the phone from the PC and then go to Options > Advanced Options > Service book on your phone. And make sure there is Service Book with name 'Browser Config [BrowserConfig]' is there.
• Now you have to configure the browser to use this Service book. To do goto Options > Advanced Options > Browser and check if 'Browser' is selected as shown in the image below.
• Now go to your Blackberry Desktop. Voila.... there is your Browser icon.
• Next step is that you need Access Point in Options > Advanced Options > TCP. Fill those fields. If you don't have those info's, contact your service provider and ask them.
• Restart your phone and run Browser. Enjoy your new freedom. To install AppWorld, goto hxxp://blackberry.com/appworld/download from your Blackberry Browser.
Troubleshooting:
• If you see the Browser icon, You have Service Book on your phone. If the Browser doesn’t work, go to Options > Advanced Options > Browser and check if 'Browser' is selected. Then back to Home and try Browser again. with some lucky it will work
• If your BlackBerry have IT-Policy. Try to remove IT-Policy first and then Enable Browser.
• If you are still stuck somewhere, try reinstalling the Blackberry OS (Upgrade or Downgrade) then retry this hack.

We have tested a few apps which seem to be in dispute as to whether they work or not with out an official BB dataplan, these apps are:
Google mail, Google maps, Opera Mini, Google search + voice search, Google Sync, Google Talk w/ Jabber + a bunch more will work with out BES/BIS, initial install for these apps can be done with out this hack via Wifi and if needed then via APN, but installing this hack just makes life a lot easier and cheaper for some of us.

Many thanks to Anworm for the browser hack!

It's not a matter of what I think. Facts are facts. You do need the RIM/BlackBerry service as stated by others above. Your 'solution' is to steal the service.

I imagine you are laughing...until someone steals from you.

I don't see how enabling functionality on my device is stealing?
I am also paying for the bandwidth?

I doubt those question marks are in good faith. You'll rationalize any argument I or anyone else makes.

Why do you think carriers that support BlackBerrys have BlackBerry data plans? RIM gets paid for services rendered. Buying a cheap carrier data plan so you can mooch BlackBerry data ("...the Blackberry Dataplan is very costly. So using it to download apps and browsing will burn their pockets. These people will be benefited if they could access Browser using normal GPRS/3G dataplan which is way cheaper") means you aren't paying RIM for the service you are using.

But I know, you have all kinds of excuses.

I'm done with you.

Yes I was hoping you would bring up a contract clause saying that changing the browser from wifi to wan is an offense and classed as theft, after all, you are calling me a thief.
Just maybe back up what you say now sir?
Oh wait, your done...

I am done proving my point also, which is the apps work.

Anyway, If enabling functions on my device that are on there anyway is theft,
I am guilty then

Yes. You definitely are guilty of theft if you are accessing data services for which you are not paying.

Google mobile apps are free,
if I was accessing RIM's email services or any other services from RIM,
Which is impossible with out a BB plan, yes, that would be theft.

I don't see how enabling wan on my browser for accessing google search has anything to do with RIM or theft.

Further more, if anyone else wants to bash me, please show me where it states I am stealing by changing my default browser configuration from WIFI only, to WAN also, only to access Google apps, while paying for data usage of course.

You can NOT access any of RIM's services with this hack, but the mentioned Google apps WILL work.

Lastly, kids should not have to pay for RIM services if Google apps do it for free.
