Default Oh yeah...I'm ranting

Please Login to Remove!

Very quick rant: I hope all those in life who choose to spend it as spammers die a very painful death. Picked up my Blackberry this morning after a refreshing 5 hrs sleep to find 304 messages.....all spam, all sent to my work email. Can't wait til my IT guy gets in so I can ask him what the hell happened to our supposed filter.

I would offer my true feelings toward these pieces of scum, but I'm trying to remember this is (basically) a "family friendly" forum!

I hear you. I think that someone in spam world cme up with a new way to get around the filters, and has thus escalated the spam wars. I had a couple of hundred on the BB a couple of days ago.

Worse then plain SPAM messages is being a victim of back scattering. You know when you get thousand and thousands of unable to be delivered messages because your email address was spoofed and attached to millions of sent SPAM. It was so bad last month that these message were coming in 50 per minute into my inbox. I had to shut off the mailbox for a few days until the back scattering subsided.

I've had that happen. It was maddening.

What most people don't realize about spam is that it's mostly automated, sent from compromised (zombie) pc's that are part of a botnet. The botnet master commands all the zombie machines to use them to send spam. Email addresses are gathered by bots scouring the web (which is why it's never a good idea to post your email address *anywhere* on the web. The lists are bought and sold by spammers/botnet operators.

I just read this article about how spammers make money, using the "storm worm" botnet.

Researchers Hijack Storm Worm to Track Profits - Security Fix

The reason there is so much spam is that it makes money -- bottom line. According to that study, one in ten people clicked through the links in the spam to buy "enhancers". If no one clicked the links, spam would stop because the spammers would no longer be profitable.

Spam is also used to spread viruses/trojans/malware. The big thing now is trojans that want to steal your passwords.

Hopefully everyone is experiencing less spam the last couple of days. Here's why:

Host of Internet Spam Groups Is Cut Off - washingtonpost.com

Unfortunately the criminals behind the spam will likely find new hosting and routing before long. They make too much money off spam to roll over and give up.

Before you let your IT guy "have it" you might want to keep things in perspective. At my employer, we successfully filter out 98% of the spam email, which amounts to about 80,000 messages per day.

What IT does not hear is what a good job they're (usually) doing. What they do hear, is about the six messages that got through to the CIO. But what the CIO won't admit is that he's personally responsible for some of his own spam by signing up for silly websites that sell his address. That and the emails coming from newspaper websites that he signed up for. When you try to tell him that's not spam, he won't listen.

In all likelihood, your filter server probably went down....

I often wonder what spammers and telemarketers tell their friends what they do for a living.
I know if my friend said to me: "Hey, I just got a new job. I send out millions of spam e-mails a day", I'd beat the crap out of him!

You are being too kind. What ever happened to the ole drawn, sectioned and quartered? Sounds like a good way of dealing with spammers to me.

Wishing an end to someone's life is too merciful. Think of some other alternatives.
