To case or not to case - your input, please!
Please Login to Remove!
Hi all... going to get a Torch on Monday for work... heard a lot of +/-. Currently I love my old Bold - the very first generation Bold. Anyhow, the Torch is "free" anyway.
But the major question here is should I get a hard case to protect the Torch? It seems that there are no solid winners out there.
Your suggestion of a hard case protector is greatly appreciated and a pic to show would be great, too!
TIA

Re: To case or not to case - your input, please!
This sounds like a cop out but it's not. It depends on you. I've never used skins, screen protectors, hard cases, but just the OEM holster. And my BlackBerrys occaisionally take a tumble. The standard holster provides surprising protection against drops, and BlackBerrys are generally tough. But if you are the type who tends to break phones no matter what, then one those cases is probably a good idea for you.

Re: To case or not to case - your input, please!
I don't use a case, I have tried them but don't personally use them. I just use the holster when I carry my device in my pocket, the rest of the time work/car/home its on charge. If I drop it Ill scratch/damage it, I'm carefful with it. There's a lot to be said for cases, and there's a lot of choices. What you have to ask is what kind use your BB will have, and enviroments it will be used in. Then look at the replys you get here, then check some cases out in stores. You might then see if you like/need one. I think there is a lot to be said for the Holsters that come with BBs, and unless your playing tennis with it and treat it with care, all should be well. Finally look for Threads/ posts here, see what other people experiences are with cases.
Hope this helps

With the old bold, the necessity of pulling the battery daily made cases a royal pita. The 9800 does not seem to share this curse. I still don't use a case. Don't see the need. As others have stated, they build these things to take a hit.

I use the otter box and its fine. Doesn't add a lot of bulk or weight but as some have said its a personal choice. I like the protection as I have this Torch for 3 years and need it to be in working order. I use a case for that reason.

I actually use the belt holster from my 9700. Its a little more snug but the magnetic flap still closes securely. I usually wear my phone on waistband. I have a Zagg screen protector to protect that gorgeous perfect size touch screen. Can't help with the question of hard cases though.

Re: To case or not to case - your input, please!
my problem with the otterbox is that the faceplate part of the case has two tiny clips... and breaks easily
mine broke after 10 days... without falling...
i might consider a vinyl or zagg protector for cosmetic protection... i simply use a oem holster with swivel clip

i seen a guy in a starbucks who i thought was talking to his shoe only to discover he had a hard case on this torch. If you do get a case your phone will be giant, much like a shoe.

Re: To case or not to case - your input, please!
i had the otterbox commuter case and tbh, i found it to be crap. it did not allow the slide to close fully so there was always this 'loose' feeling like the phone would slide up for itself. also, the case cracked when attempting a manual battery pull close to where the inner sleeve hooks into the phone. on my wife's phone, it did partially save it from damage after a fall, tho the front face (of the case) broke in two places. i have since donated my commuter case as spare parts to my wife and am now using the OEM leather pouch and i feel a lot better about it

Re: To case or not to case - your input, please!
I tried an otterbox commuter case and it was junk. It failed within a week of putting it on the Torch. I could not believe that I spent so much on it...
Last month I decided to try again to get something that was durable and bought the following on eBay for $5.49 with free shipping.
Black Rubber Hard Cover Case for BLACKBERRY TORCH 9800 - eBay (item 160550131109 end time Feb-23-11 07:31:02 PST)
So far it is working out great. The front screen surround on the slide is staying in place. And it looks good, too....
