Default AC/Battery charger locks up my Storm!

Please Login to Remove!

Hey fellas,

I have a aftermarket eBay special AC/Power adapter that I keep at work to keep my Storm freshly charged since the battery drains so quick. Well, seems like almost everytime I hook it up to charge with this aftermarket adapter it usually locks up my Storm on me and I can't do anything but to pull the battery out of it. I can't even use "Quick Pull" because I can't get to it at that point!

So was wondering if anyone else seems to run into this problem? It does it's job to charge my Storm up but seems to drain the RAM or something to lock it up or make it very slow in responding which leads me to pull out the battery anyway. Should I just fork up the money and get a RIM/O.E.M. charger?

Thanks in advance!

I would definitely stop using that charger. No USB port you could use on a PC? I know that is slower charging but it is less expensive since the phone came with the cable. If that is not an option, I would say spend the money on the RIM charger. I would hate to see you ruin a $200 phone to save $10 or $15.

Good point Scassel, not sure if I want to use my only micro-USB pc sync cord since I only have one and they're not as easy or cheap to come by as the regualar size USB adapter that my 8830 used. Thanks RIM!

Anyway, I think I'll look for a genuine RIM power adapter to properly charge my Storm. Maybe the after market cheepy one is not providing the correct amount of voltage and or milli amps to properly charge up my device and the phone is fighting to accept the charge which in turn uses up all or most of the RAM on the phone. Just my guess...

Maybe I'll get lucky and find one for a great price on eBay!....lol

If you need a cable, always check monoprice.com

3ft Micro USB cable for $2.09. It's under $5 to ship it to me via USPS:

For only $1.43 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 3 ft USB A/male to Micro USB 5 pin male Cable | USB 2.0 Cable - Micro-B Type

Default Same Problem

I had the same problem with a cheap charger I bought from eBay. I made a quick no-load measurement and it looked ok so I'm guessing it performed poorly under load or did not properly filter out all the noise it should have. Same symptoms as you report, locking up the unit so only an actual battery pull would reset it. In the end I bought a couple of mini-to-micro USB adapters and used them on all my older genuine BB chargers. The adapters were about $1.50 each and even had a genuine looking Moto holo on them. The advantage with using the adapters is that I can use the same charger for both my Storm and my wife's Pearl when we travel.

Hope this helps.

I'm taking a course similar to what Opposable_Thumbs did...

I went to Amazon.com and searched for Mini USD to Micro USB adapters. I found a cable that was $.60 with $2.98 shipping. I bought two of these (for a combined, total cost of about $7) and plan to use them with the myriad of Mini USB chargers that I have for my BBs, headsets, etc.

Wirelessly posted

I had a charger I bought on Ebay that re-booted my Storm when I plugged it in. I unplugged it immediately and trashed it.
