8300 Curve no display of providers in China, phone calls and sms ok but no email

Today my boss coming from Austria, Europe arrived in China, Beijing and wanted to use his brand new BB 8300. He tried to change manually the network provider to China Mobile, but when he entered the menu to change from automatic to manual no network provider appeared, not even when he was resetting the whole device (also rejecting the battery). He is able to send sms and phone calls, but he cannot use the email services at all. He does not even see the provider┤s name he is currently using. Calling our network operator in Austria (A1 Mobilkom Austria) they told me that all parameters for data and email transmission are ok at the network operator┤s side, they think the problem is in China or it is a firmware problem of the BB 8300. There is a roaming agreement between A1 Mobilkom Austria and China Mobile - so it should work, they said. My boss has at the moment no chance to change manually from default network provider (which he does not see, and therefore does not know which one it is) to the China Mobile (which is also not listed, because the list is empty). Does anyone know a solution or a good hint?
