Considering I'm in the boonies right now, it's pretty accurate.

I don't think it will ever be totally accurate since your bb only has one radio to transmit and receive. For cell tower triangulation to work properly you need to get an accurate reading you need to be talking to at least 3 towers at the same time. Your bb can only talk to one tower at a time.

I noticed today that the nearest cell tower is not the one that the phone always connects to. This can cause additional "inaccuracy." There is a Verizon tower about 1/2 mile SE from my house and yet my cellphone always picks a tower about 5 miles away. Both bizzare and interesting.

I also noticed, which I suspected all along, that the antenna on the 8830 is not omni-directional. At some locations I can pick up different cell towers by pointing the phone north, south, east and west. There also seems to be a varible if the phone is horizontal or vertical if you are located near two cell towers.

Anyone else have any interesting observations?

I live in DC and it usually places me within 1 block of where I am downtown, 3 in close in suburbs where i live--which is quite decent. But that varies depending upon (i guess) availability of cell towers. On parts of Canal road, which runs along the Potomac, it sometimes has me across the river. Great idea, can't wait till it gets even more precise.

City/State: DC/MD suburbs
Average Radius:1500
In radius or not:always

There are lots of things at play here. First if you are in a major city or a very densely populated area such as DC/MD burbs. There might be more than 1 cell tower covering one particular area for one carrier. This is because of tower capacity. I can only assume that just because you can see a verizon tower next to you doesn't mean your cell phone is going to use it. Remember cell towers talk to each other so they can hand off information about when you are going to switch towers when moving from one cell to the next.

This afternoon I was at a location about one mile north my house and My Location had me about a mile east of my actual location. I watched My Location change as I drove home -- about half way, it changed to what it always shows when I'm at home -- a location about 8 miles south of my house.

It depends on where I'm at. If I'm at my apartment then its maybe a mile or a little more off but not too much. As someone else posted, I was driving down the interstate and it was right with me. Not as good as GPS but not having GPS its better than nothing.

I just got a blackberry pearl 8130 from verizon wireless. I downloaded google maps and "my location" is showing me in Michigan when I am in Ohio. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can correct this.

I noticed "My location" showed it was 600 ft away. I think it is pretty accurate.

Internationally, "My Location" is a joke. I'm in Doha, Qatar, Middle East, and my Google Maps says I'm in Dallas, Texas, S Hampton Rd.
